Meaning · English
Sindhu, to set out you first join Trishtama, then Susartu, Rasa and Shveti; with Kubha and Mehatnu you reach Gomati and Krumu, riding with them on one chariot.
The verse before this one called on Ganga and Yamuna in the east. Now the seer turns west and names the streams that feed the Sindhu, the Indus, on its western side. Scholars match Kubha to the Kabul, Krumu to the Kurram and Gomati to the Gomal. Rasa is also the name of a far-off river of legend. The key word is 'one chariot'. The great river does not just absorb these streams. It travels with them as companions sharing a single car.
Picture a school bus on its morning route. It stops at one house, then the next, and each child climbs aboard. By the last stop the bus is full, and everyone arrives at school together. The Sindhu works the same way, gathering each named stream along its course until all of them travel as one company.
