ऋजीत्येनी रुशती महित्वा परि ज्रयांसि भरते रजांसि। अदब्धा सिन्धुरपसामपस्तमाश्वा न चित्रा वपुषीव दर्शता

Meaning · English

Straight-running, white and shining in her greatness, the unchecked Sindhu bears her swift waters across the lands. She is busiest of the busy, striking as a mare, lovely as a woman.

The Sindhu, the Indus, is known here by how she moves and how she looks. She runs straight, and her water is pale and full of light. Her greatness is the sheer load she carries: fast water driven over wide country. Sāyaṇa takes that last word as 'waters'; other readers take it as the 'regions' she crosses. Nothing holds her back or harms her. Of everything that works, her work is speed, and she does it best. To the eye she is like a fine mare, or a woman of graceful form.

Picture a long freight train crossing open plains at full speed, its cars lit gold by a low sun, nothing on the line to slow it. It is heavy and fast at once, and people still stop to watch it pass. The Sindhu is the same: a huge mass moving straight and quick, unhindered, and beautiful to look at.

सीधी बहती, उजली और अपनी महिमा में दमकती, बेरोक सिंधु अपना वेगवान जल देशों के पार ले जाती है। वह व्यस्तों में सबसे व्यस्त है, घोड़ी-सी आकर्षक, स्त्री-सी सुंदर।

सिंधु, यानी इंडस नदी, यहाँ अपनी चाल और अपने रूप से पहचानी जाती है। वह सीधी बहती है, और उसका जल उजला और प्रकाश से भरा है। उसकी महिमा वह भारी बोझ है जिसे वह ढोती है: विस्तृत भूभाग पर दौड़ता तेज़ जल। सायण उस अंतिम शब्द को 'जल' मानते हैं; अन्य व्याख्याकार उसे उन 'प्रदेशों' के अर्थ में लेते हैं जिन्हें वह पार करती है। कोई उसे न रोकता है, न हानि पहुँचाता है। जो कुछ भी काम करता है, उन सबमें उसका काम गति है, और वह उसे सबसे अच्छा करती है। देखने में वह किसी उत्तम घोड़ी जैसी है, या सुडौल रूप वाली किसी स्त्री जैसी।
