Dressed in Wool and Gold

Rig Veda 10.75.8

Meaning · English

Sindhu has fine horses, fine chariots, fine garments; golden, well made, rich in food and wool, ever young, rich in grasses, the fortunate one wears honey-sweet growth.

Sindhu, the Indus, is pictured as a young woman who owns everything a household prizes: good horses, good chariots, fine clothes, gold ornaments, plenty of food. She stays young, her water never failing. Sāyaṇa reads the wool literally. Flocks graze near her, and their fleece becomes blankets. He takes the next word as a tough plant that farmers twist into rope to tie their ploughs, though other readers hear two more river names. Her last garment is the sweet-bearing shrubs crowding her banks.

Picture a bride on her wedding day: a gold necklace, a thick wool shawl, flowers pinned in her hair. Every piece came from her own family's flocks, fields and savings, so what she wears tells you what her people own. The poet dresses the river the same way, and each ornament is something her banks produce.
