सुखं रथं युयुजे सिन्धुरश्विनं तेन वाजं सनिषदस्मिन्नाजौ। महान्ह्यस्य महिमा पनस्यतेऽदब्धस्य स्वयशसो विरप्शिनः

Meaning · English

Sindhu has yoked her easy-running, horse-drawn chariot; with it may she win the prize in this contest. Her greatness is praised as great: unharmed, glorious in herself, thundering.

Sindhu, the Indus, is pictured as a goddess driving her own team. Her chariot is easy-running; Sāyaṇa also hears 'comfort-bringing' in that word. With it she is asked to win the prize, a word for both strength and the food that sustains it, and Sāyaṇa reads it as food. The contest may be a race or a battle, or, for Sāyaṇa, the sacrifice itself. Her greatness has three marks: no one can harm her, her glory is her own, and she is loud, a word Sāyaṇa takes simply as great.

A loaded freight train pulls out of a yard. No one pushes it, and nothing on the track can slow it. Its weight and speed come from its own engine, and the rails hum long before it arrives. Sindhu's greatness is that kind of force: unharmed, glorious by its own power, heard before it is seen.

सिन्धु ने अपना सहज दौड़ने वाला, घोड़ों से जुता रथ जोत लिया है; उसी से वह इस होड़ में पुरस्कार जीते। उसकी महिमा की महान कहकर स्तुति होती है: अक्षत, अपने आप में यशस्विनी, गर्जन करती हुई।

सिन्धु, यानी सिन्धु नदी, एक देवी के रूप में दिखाई गई है जो अपने ही घोड़ों का दल हाँक रही है। उसका रथ सहज दौड़ने वाला है; सायण इस शब्द में 'सुख देने वाला' अर्थ भी सुनते हैं। उसी रथ से उससे पुरस्कार जीतने की प्रार्थना की जाती है, यह शब्द बल और उस बल को टिकाए रखने वाले अन्न दोनों के लिए आता है, और सायण इसे अन्न ही पढ़ते हैं। होड़ कोई दौड़ हो सकती है या युद्ध, या सायण के लिए स्वयं यज्ञ। उसकी महिमा के तीन लक्षण हैं: कोई उसे हानि नहीं पहुँचा सकता, उसका यश उसका अपना है, और वह गर्जन करती है, जिस शब्द को सायण सीधे 'महान' के अर्थ में लेते हैं।

माल से लदी एक मालगाड़ी यार्ड से निकलती है। कोई उसे धकेलता नहीं, और पटरी पर कुछ भी उसे धीमा नहीं कर सकता। उसका भार और उसकी गति उसके अपने इंजन से आते हैं, और उसके पहुँचने से बहुत पहले ही पटरियाँ गूँजने लगती हैं। सिन्धु की महिमा ऐसी ही शक्ति है: अक्षत, अपने ही बल से यशस्वी, दिखने से पहले सुनाई देने वाली।
