Meaning · English
Salt dispels stiffness, what has clumped and what is bound; it kindles digestion. It is oily in effect, brings on sweat, is sharp, gives relish, and cuts and splits apart. Used to excess, it brings vatarakta, a disorder of blood and vata, baldness, greying and wrinkles; thirst, skin disease, poisoning and spreading inflammation; and it wears away strength.
Vagbhata gives salt two faces. Used well, it loosens. Salt dispels three things: stambha (stiffness), sanghata (hardened clumping) and bandha (binding or obstruction); vidhmapana is that dispelling. It is agnikrt: it kindles agni, the digestive fire that turns food into the body. It is snehana, moistening, and svedana, bringing on sweat. It is tikshna, sharp and penetrating, and rochana, making food worth eating. It cuts and splits what is stuck. The verse gives no reason why too much harms. In this system's terms, the same sharpness that loosens and kindles wears the body down when pushed too far. Overused, salt brings vatarakta, a disorder of blood and vata, vata being the moving principle in the body. It brings baldness, greying and wrinkles, thirst, skin disease, poison-like effects, visarpa (a spreading skin inflammation), and lost strength. Salt is a seasoning that wakes food up, not a habit that runs the meal.
1. At your next meal, taste each dish before you reach for salt. Add it only if the food really tastes flat. 2. For one meal today, leave the salt off the table. Notice which dishes you miss it in and which you do not. 3. In the hour after your saltiest meal, notice whether thirst comes. Drink water when it does. 4. If a doctor has set a salt limit for you, keep to it. This is about paying attention, not a new rule.
Parts of this hold up well today. Salt makes food more appealing and gets saliva and appetite going, which fits Vagbhata's 'gives relish' and loosely his 'kindles agni', if agni is read as appetite and digestion. The body needs sodium for nerves, muscles and fluid balance. Thirst after salty food is ordinary physiology. Today's mainstream view also agrees that habitually eating too much salt is unwise. It is firmly linked to raised blood pressure in many people, with strain on the heart and kidneys. Very large amounts at once can be truly dangerous, especially for small children. Modern medicine knows no link between salt and baldness, greying or wrinkles. Disorders of blood and vata, skin disease and spreading inflammation have no clear modern match here. Some people, such as those who sweat heavily or have certain conditions, need different amounts, so a doctor's advice comes first.
