The Rescue of Nanda

Bhagavata Purana 10.28 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

On the eleventh day, Nanda fasted and offered his worship to Janardana. The following day, the twelfth, he stepped into the waters of the Kalindi to bathe. But he entered the water at night, heedless of the inauspicious hour of the asuras, and something terrible happened. An asura servant of Varuna, the lord of the waters, seized him and dragged him away. Nanda was taken far from his home and brought into the presence of Varuna, in the abode of the water-god.

Back on the banks of the river, the cowherds were frantic. They called out, 'Krishna! Rama!' searching for their missing friend and father. When Krishna heard that Nanda had been taken by Varuna, he did not hesitate. He traveled directly to the palace of the water-god. Upon seeing Krishna arrive, Varuna was overwhelmed with joy. He welcomed the Lord with great honor and reverence, declaring that seeing Krishna was the greatest festival of his life.

Varuna bowed deeply and said, 'My life is fulfilled today, Lord, for I have found the refuge of your feet. Please pardon this wrong; a foolish servant of mine, who did not know right from wrong, brought your father here. Show your grace to me as well, Govinda, and let this father of yours be taken home, you who love your father so.' Krishna, pleased by the god's devotion, accepted the apology and led Nanda out of the depths, returning him to the joyful embrace of his family.

Nanda was astonished to see the majesty of the lord of the waters and the way the guardians of the worlds bowed low before Krishna, and he told his kinsmen of it. The cowherds, hearing this, grew eager. They wondered if the Lord of all would also grant them his own subtle abode. Krishna, the all-seeing one, understood their silent longing. He felt a great compassion for them, knowing that most people wander through life blinded by ignorance and the cycle of desire and action.

To remove their darkness, Krishna led the cowherds to the eternal, timeless light of Brahman—the truth that only the most focused sages ever perceive. He took them to the lake of Brahman, submerged them in it and lifted them out, and they saw the world of Brahman that Akrura had once visited. Nanda and the others were filled with supreme bliss, gazing in wonder at that world and at Krishna, whom the Vedas were praising there.
