The story · English
On a night in autumn, when the jasmine flowers were in full bloom, Krishna, relying on his internal potency, Yoga-maya, felt a desire to delight the women of Vraja. When the moon rose, reddening the east and lighting the forest, he began to play his flute. The sound reached the hearts of the Gopis. Some were milking cows, some were tending to their children, and others were serving their husbands or eating their meals. Yet, upon hearing that melody, they were captivated. They hurried off, some with their clothes and jewelry put on the wrong way round, ignoring the pleas of their fathers, brothers, and husbands. Driven by an irresistible attraction to Krishna, they left their homes for the forest, their earrings swaying with every urgent step.
Not all could leave. Some Gopis remained trapped inside their houses, closing their eyes to meditate on Krishna in deep longing. The burning pain of separation shook off all their inauspicious karma, and the bliss of his embrace, reached in meditation, used up all their merit. Though they thought of him as a lover, it was the Supreme Self they joined, and at once they abandoned their bodies made of the gunas, breaking free from all bonds. King Parikshit asked how they could be freed from the gunas, since they knew Krishna as their beloved, not as Brahman. Suka answered that even Shishupala reached perfection while hating Krishna; whoever fixes desire, anger, fear, affection, oneness or friendship on Hari becomes absorbed in him.
When the Gopis arrived, Krishna spoke to them with charming words that bewildered them. 'Welcome, fortunate ones,' he said. 'But why have you come? The night is terrifying and filled with dangerous beings. You should return to Vraja. Your parents, sons, and husbands must be searching for you. You have seen the forest in bloom, lit by the moon, the trees by the Yamuna stirring in the breeze. Now go back to your homes, care for your husbands, and feed your crying children. Perhaps you have come here because you are enchanted by me, but a wife's primary duty is to her husband, regardless of his flaws. Love for me comes from hearing of me, seeing me, meditating on me and singing my praises, not from being near me.'
The Gopis were devastated. They wept, their tears washing the kunkuma on their breasts, and they stood in silence, heartbroken that their beloved spoke to them like a stranger. Finally, they spoke. 'You cannot say such cruel things to us,' they pleaded. 'We have abandoned everything for the root of your lotus feet. You, who know dharma, have said our duty is to our husbands, children and kin, but you are our only true soul and friend. We cannot move a single step away from you. Your smile and your songs have extinguished all other desires. We are your servants; let us find refuge under your protective arms and gaze upon your beautiful face.'
Touched by their devotion, Krishna laughed with kindness and embraced them. He led the hundred groups of women through the forest, wearing his Vaijayanti garland, filling the woods with joy. They went to the banks of the Yamuna, where the white sands felt cool beneath them and the air was sweet with the scent of water-lilies. There, with embraces, touches, jokes, glances and smiles, he stirred love in them and gave them joy. Honoured by Krishna, the Gopis thought themselves the best women on earth. Seeing their pride in this good fortune, Krishna suddenly vanished, disappearing from their sight to humble them and bring them to a state of true grace.
