The story · English
When Krishna disappeared from their sight, the women of Vraja felt a sudden, sharp void. They wandered through the groves like she-elephants who had lost the leader of their herd, their eyes searching every shadow. They were consumed by a sweet, frantic longing, and they began to take on his gait, his smile, his glances and his way of speaking. Their hearts were entirely occupied by him, and they began to seek him out with a desperate intensity, their movements reflecting the very nature of the one they missed.
They began to speak to the nature around them, asking the trees if they had seen the son of Nanda. They questioned the Ashvattha, the Plaksha, and the Nyagrodha trees, for he had gone, stealing their hearts with his loving smiles and glances. They turned to the Kurabaka, Ashoka, Naga, Punnaga, and Champaka trees, asking if Balarama's younger brother, whose smile humbles the proud, had passed by. They even pleaded with the Tulasi plants, asking if the beloved Achyuta had walked past them with his garlands of flowers.
The women grew so overwhelmed that they began to act as if they were Krishna himself. One girl pretended to be him, telling another, 'I am Krishna, look at the way I move!' Another acted out his bravery, shouting, 'Do not fear the wind or the rain, for I have provided your protection!' while lifting her upper cloth with one hand, as he had lifted Govardhana hill. Some mimicked his childhood mischiefs, pretending to defeat demons, and when one played the flute and called to the distant cows as he did, the others praised her, saying, 'Well done!', all of them lost for a moment in his divine persona.
Eventually, they spotted footprints in the dust. They noticed the marks of a banner, a lotus, a thunderbolt, and a goad. Beside his they saw a young woman's footprints, and they guessed he had walked with his forearm resting on her shoulder, as an elephant walks with a she-elephant. They felt a sting of jealousy, imagining that he had left them behind to enjoy the privacy of the woods with a single, lucky girl. Farther on, her prints vanished and his sank deeper. 'Look,' one cried, 'he carried her here, for the grass must have hurt her tender feet!'
The girl he had taken thought herself the best of all women, and in her pride she told him, 'I cannot walk any further; carry me wherever you wish.' Krishna said, 'Climb onto my shoulder,' and then vanished, and she wept, 'O my lord, my beloved, where are you?' Following his tracks, the other women found her nearby, bewildered and grieving, and they were amazed to hear of the honour he had shown her and the shame her pride had brought. They went on into the forest as far as the moonlight reached, and turned back at the darkness. Singing of his qualities together and forgetting their homes, they returned to the banks of the Kalindi, longing for their beloved Krishna to come.
