The story · English

The women of Vraja were consumed by a longing so deep it felt like a physical weight. They sang to Krishna, praising how his birth had brought glory to their land and how even the goddess Indirā finds shelter there. They begged him to appear before them. They told him that his eyes, which stole the beauty of lotuses in autumn ponds, were killing them, his unpaid maidservants, and asked whether that was not murder. They recalled how he had protected them again and again—from the poisoned water, the serpent demon, the storm's rain and wind, the lightning-fire, the bull demon, Maya's son and every fear. They reminded him that he knows the inner heart of every living being.

They remembered his lotus-like feet and his smile, which could shatter the pride of his own people. They called him a friend and asked him to look upon them as his servants. They described the sweetness of his words and the way his stories acted as a cooling balm for those whose lives were scorched by suffering. They spoke of his smiles, his loving glances and his secret, heart-touching talks, which were a blessing to meditate on and yet stirred their minds into turmoil. When he left Vraja to herd the cows, their minds were troubled at the thought of his lotus-soft feet being hurt by stones and sharp shoots of grass.

They sang of how, at each day's end, he came home showing again and again his lotus face, framed by dark curls and thick with the dust of the herd, and it woke love in their minds. They described the way he adorned the earth with his presence. They recalled the sound of his flute, which kisses his lips and destroys all grief, making people forget every other attachment. When he roamed the forest by day, a single moment without seeing him felt like an age, and whoever made eyelids was a fool, for every blink hid his face. They had set aside husbands, sons, relatives, brothers and kin to come to him, bewitched by his song. O cheat, they asked, who abandons women in the night?

The gopis expressed a desperate need for his presence, admitting that their hearts were filled with a longing they could not control. They prayed for him to touch their hearts and remove the pain of separation. They asked for his grace and for the sweetness of his lips, pleading with him not to remain distant while they suffered. They spoke of how his own secret talks, smiling face and loving glances troubled their minds again and again, and how their hearts grew restless. They begged the hero, the one who removes the sorrows of his devotees, to return to them and end their agony.

In their final plea, they spoke of the physical and emotional toll of his absence. They asked him to be the cure for the disease of their separation and to grant them the sight of his beautiful face. They placed his tender lotus feet fearfully and gently on their hard breasts, yet on those feet he roamed the forest—did the pebbles not hurt them? Their minds reeled, for he was their very life. They surrendered themselves completely, asking him to lead them back to the joy of his company. Their song was a bridge of devotion, stretching across the distance, hoping to bring the protector of Vraja back to their side.
