The Return of Krishna

The story · English
The gopis were longing for Krishna, their hearts heavy with the pain of separation. They spent their time singing and weeping, their voices echoing their deep desire to see him once more. Just as their longing reached its peak, Krishna appeared before them. He wore a bright yellow garment, a garland of flowers, and a smile as radiant as a lotus bloom. He stood there as one who bewitches even Kamadeva, the god of love, and the sight of him was like a sudden breath of life returning to those who had forgotten how to breathe. Overjoyed, the women rose all at once, their eyes brightening with a love that had finally found its center.
In their excitement, the gopis expressed their affection in a hundred different ways. One joyfully took his lotus-like hand between her joined palms, while another placed his arm, fragrant with sandalwood paste, upon her own shoulder. A slender gopi took into her cupped hands the betel he had chewed, and another, overwhelmed by emotion, placed his holy feet against her chest. One gopi was so swept up in the intensity of her love that she frowned and, biting her lip, looked at him with sidelong glances as if to strike him, though it was only the turbulence of her passion.
Another gopi simply gazed at his lotus-face without blinking, drinking it in yet never sated, just as saints are never sated by his feet. One gopi closed her eyes and pressed him to her heart, feeling a spiritual ecstasy that only a true yogi knows. For all of them, the sight of Krishna was the ultimate celebration. Their suffering vanished instantly, just as people shed their pain on reaching the wise one, the Self within. In the presence of the Lord, the gopis were freed from sorrow, and Krishna himself seemed to shine with a brilliance that surpassed everything, like the Supreme Person amid his own energies.
Together, they went to the banks of the Kalindi river. The air was filled with the scent of kunda and mandara flowers, and bees buzzed around the blossoms under the light of the autumn moon, which had chased away the darkness. The gopis spread their upper cloths, marked with the kunkuma from their breasts, as a seat for him on the soft, white sands of the riverbank, and Krishna sat upon it. He sat there, the Lord whose seat is in the hearts of the masters of yoga, surrounded by his devotees, his single form embodying all the beauty and grace of the three worlds.
The gopis, a little piqued, teased him with playful glances and asked him to explain: some love those who love them, some love even those who do not, and some love neither. Krishna said that friends who loved each other in return served only themselves, with no real friendship or dharma; those who loved without return, like the compassionate and like parents, showed faultless dharma and friendship; and the self-content, the fulfilled, the ungrateful and those who betrayed their gurus loved no one. He himself, he said, did not return even his devotees' love, so that it would keep flowing to him, just as a poor man who gains wealth and loses it thinks of nothing else. They had left the world, the Vedas and their own people for him, and he had hidden only to keep their minds on him, still loving them unseen, so they must not find fault with him. Even in a lifetime of the gods, he confessed, he could not repay them, who had broken the hard chains of home; let their own goodness be their reward.
