The Divine Dance of the Rasa

Bhagavata Purana 10.33 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

After listening to the beautiful words of Krishna, the Gopis felt the agony of separation vanish, and their hopes were fulfilled by the touch of his limbs. Then, Govinda began the Rasa dance. Surrounded by the Gopis, who were like gems among women, he moved among them. They held each other by the arms, and Krishna entered the circle, placing himself between pairs of women, so that each Gopi thought he was at her own side. Meanwhile the sky was crowded with hundreds of celestial chariots of the gods and their wives, captivated by the scene, while the masters of the Gandharvas sang of his stainless fame and showers of flowers fell upon the dancers.

The Rasa circle was filled with the loud, rhythmic sound of the Gopis' bracelets, anklets, and tinkling bells. In the center of this brilliance stood the son of Devaki, shining like a great emerald among golden jewels. The Gopis danced and sang, their faces glowing with perspiration and their earrings swaying against their cheeks. They looked like flashes of lightning surrounding a dark rain-cloud. Some Gopis were overjoyed just to touch Krishna, while others sang in harmony with him. When Krishna praised one of them, saying, 'Well done, well done,' she sang the same melody in the dhruva measure, and he honoured her greatly.

As the dance continued, some Gopis grew exhausted. One, her bracelets slipping, put her arm on the shoulder of the mace-bearer, Krishna. Another leaned close to smell the fragrance of his lotus-like arm, which was scented with sandalwood. When one Gopi pressed her cheek against his, Krishna gave her the betel he had been chewing. Another, tired from the dance, placed Krishna's lotus-hand on her breasts. With his arms around their necks, the Gopis sang and danced with their beloved, the sole lord of Sri, in a joyful circle. Their hair became loosened and their garlands fell away as they moved in harmony with the Lord, who delighted in the beauties of Vraja.

The celestial women and the moon, with his entire entourage, watched this divine play in amazement. Krishna, though self-satisfied, expanded himself to be with every single Gopi simultaneously. When the women grew tired, Krishna tenderly wiped their faces with his hands. Thrilled by the touch of his fingernails, the Gopis honoured him with smiling glances and sang of his holy deeds. Followed by bees humming like Gandharva chiefs, he went into the Yamuna with them to relieve their tiredness, like a tired king of elephants breaking through the embankments with his she-elephants. There the Gopis splashed him and laughed as the gods showered flowers. Then he walked through a grove beside the Yamuna, fragrant with water-lilies and humming with bees.

King Parikshit, hearing this, asked why the Lord of the Universe would act against the rules of dharma by touching the wives of others. Shukadeva explained that the fire consumes everything, yet its heat is not a defect; similarly, the actions of the Divine are not the same as those of ordinary men. He warned that one who is not a lord must never do this, even in the mind; he would perish, as anyone but Rudra would who drank the poison born from the ocean. Krishna had assumed a human form to show grace to all beings. The cowherd men did not resent Krishna, for his maya made each think his own wife was beside him. When the night of Brahma ended, the Gopis went home unwillingly, with Vasudeva's permission. He who hears this story of Vishnu's play with the women of Vraja with faith will gain deep devotion and be freed from the disease of worldly desire.
