Meaning · English

In the beginning this was Brahman. It knew only itself: 'I am Brahman.' So it became all. Whoever knows this now becomes all, and even gods cannot stop him.

Brahman is the name for the whole of what is. At the start it knew only itself, and that knowing made it everything. Anyone who wakes to 'I am Brahman' becomes the whole too, whether god, seer or person. The seer Vamadeva saw that he had been Manu and the sun. Someone who worships a god as separate, thinking 'that one is other, I am another', has missed this. Such a person serves the gods like livestock, so the gods are not pleased when people find out.

Walking past a shop window, you notice someone keeping pace beside you and wonder who it is. Then you realize it is your own reflection. Nothing in the glass changed. Only the recognition did. Knowing 'I am Brahman' works the same way. Nothing new is gained. A person stops taking the whole for a stranger.
