Deeds and Learning Decide
Katha Upanishad 2.2.7
Meaning · English
Some embodied beings pass into a womb to take on a body. Others pass into what stands still and does not move. Each goes as its deeds were, and as what it learned was.
Yama is answering Nachiketas's question about what becomes of the self after death. He names two destinations and one rule. Take the words one at a time. Yoni is the womb, the place where a living body begins. Sthanu is a post or a stump, something rooted and unmoving. So some beings enter wombs and are born as creatures that move and feel, and others pass into what stands fixed. Karma is action, what a being has done. Shruta is what has been heard, so the learning and understanding a being has taken in. Yama says the destination follows both: how one acted, and what one knew. The reason for saying it is Nachiketas's fear and uncertainty about death. Yama does not leave the matter to chance or to a whim. He says it runs by a rule the being itself has helped to write. The listener is asked to see that conduct and understanding are not small matters, since both carry past the end of this body. Shankara reads shruta as the knowledge and meditation a person gained, so that a higher birth follows from deeds joined with understanding, and a lower one from deeds with little or none.
A key is filed with its own pattern of cuts, and it fits only the lock that matches them. The cuts are made slowly, one pass at a time, and no one can ask the key to open a different door. Deeds and learning are the filing, and the door that opens is the birth they fit.
1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes recalling one thing you did today that you would gladly repeat, and one you would not. 2. Note where each came from: a habit, something you were taught, something you heard said again and again at home or at work. 3. Tomorrow, choose one small act from the first list and do it on purpose, at a set hour. 4. This week, pick one useful thing to learn, such as a short passage read aloud or a skill from someone older, and give it ten minutes a day.
Meera stands at the kitchen sink at eleven at night. An hour ago she snapped at her son over a spilled glass of milk, and his face went blank. She hears her own mother's voice in hers, the same clipped tone she swore never to use. Yama's answer to Nachiketas gives her a way to see this. What she has done and what she has absorbed are not separate: the deed grows out of what she has heard, and the next deed grows out of this one. She can trace the sharp voice back to its source, and she can see that apologising tomorrow morning is itself a deed that will shape what comes after. Ordinary experience bears this out: what is repeated becomes easier to repeat. The Upanishad speaks of far more than a kitchen, of where a being goes after death, and that is its own teaching, given as Yama's answer. In this moment the verse does not undo the harsh words, ease her tiredness, or settle whether her son is hurt. It only shows her where the next choice begins.
