Meaning · English

The Person who keeps watch among sleepers, shaping each wished-for thing in turn, is the Pure One. He is Brahman, and he alone is called deathless. All worlds rest in him; nothing passes beyond him. This is truly That.

Three words carry it. Purusha is "person," from an old sense of one who dwells in the city of the body. Kama is wish or desire, and also the thing wished for. Amrita is a-mrita, "not dead." Brahman, the word Yama uses next, comes from a root meaning to grow vast: the real ground on which everything stands. Yama tells Nachiketas that the Person is the one who stays on watch while the rest of a creature sleeps, shaping one wished-for thing after another. Shukra means bright, clean, without stain. That watcher is the bright one, it is Brahman, and it alone is called deathless. Every world rests in it, and nothing stands outside it. Yama ends by saying that this is the very That the boy asked about. His reason answers the boy's question about death. Sleep takes away the senses, the thoughts, even the sense of being someone, yet something is still present and still at work. Yama points to what does not lapse and says death cannot reach it. Shankara reads the Person as the Self itself, not a separate god, one with Brahman. He takes the shaping of desires to mean that this Self, itself unmoved, is the light in which dreams and the fruits of past action appear. Yama asks Nachiketas to look for what remains when the day's activity has gone quiet.

A baker is up at three in the morning while the whole street sleeps. In the dark he shapes the loaves each household will wake up wanting. The baker is the watcher in us, working unseen through the night. The loaves are the wished-for things that appear before us.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, spend two minutes noticing that you are still here after the day's talk and plans have stopped. 2. If you wake in the night, do not reach for your phone. Notice that something in you is already aware, before any thought arrives. 3. In the morning, before getting up, try to recall one dream or one wish from the night, and see how it came without your choosing it. 4. Do this for one week.

A woman wakes at three in the morning, her father's surgery a day away, and the worry has already started talking. She lies there listening to it. Yama's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, she notices that something in her is aware of the worry without being the worry. Second, she remembers that sleep itself showed her this: while she slept, breathing and heartbeat went on, and dreams arrived that she never ordered. Third, she lets that awareness be what she rests on, instead of following each thought to its end. The worry may stay, but she is no longer entirely inside it. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind left alone at night tends to loop. The limit is plain. Yama's teaching does not make the surgery safer, remove her fear, or replace the doctor's work or sleep itself. It offers a place to stand while the fear is present, and that is all it promises.
