Fallen and Tangled

Bhavanyashtakam 2

Meaning · English

I fell into the shoreless sea of becoming, terrified of sorrow: craving, greedy, careless, always caught in a cruel world's noose. You are my refuge, you alone, Bhavani.

The singer has fallen into the sea of becoming: life after life of being born and dying, with no shore in sight. He is scared of the great sorrow in it. He is honest about himself too. He wanted things, he grabbed for more, and he was not paying attention. On top of that, a hard worldly life holds him like a noose, all the time. He makes no promise to fix any of this. He only says again that the Mother is his one way out.

Picture a dog whose leash has wrapped around a lamppost. Every lunge pulls it tighter, and the dog cannot see why. Someone has to walk it back the other way. The singer is that dog. Wanting, grabbing and not looking have wound him up, and he calls to the one who can unwind him.
