Bhavanyashtakam 3

न जानामि दानं न च ध्यानयोगं न जानामि तन्त्रं न च स्तोत्रमन्त्रम् । न जानामि पूजां न च न्यासयोगम् गतिस्त्वं गतिस्त्वं त्वमेका भवानि

Meaning · English

I know no charity, no meditation, no ritual, no hymn or chant, no worship, no touching of the body with sacred words. You are my refuge, you alone, Bhavani.

The singer lists the tools a devoted person is supposed to carry and admits to having none of them. Giving gifts, sitting in meditation, following ritual manuals, reciting hymns and chants, offering worship, placing holy syllables on the limbs one by one: all unknown. The point is not pride in ignorance. It is an honest inventory that comes up empty, and the empty list is handed over as it is. What remains is the line said twice: she is the only way through.

A small child at the doctor's cannot name the symptoms, knows no medicine, cannot fill in the form. The child just holds the mother's sleeve and lets her do the talking. The singer stands the same way before the Goddess: no methods to offer, only a grip on her sleeve.

न मैं दान जानता हूँ, न ध्यान, न अनुष्ठान, न स्तोत्र या मंत्र, न पूजा, न पवित्र शब्दों से अंगों का स्पर्श। तुम ही मेरी शरण हो, केवल तुम, भवानी।

गायक उन साधनों को गिनाता है जो एक भक्त के पास होने चाहिए, और मान लेता है कि उसके पास इनमें से एक भी नहीं है। दान देना, ध्यान में बैठना, अनुष्ठान की विधियों का पालन करना, स्तोत्र और मंत्र पढ़ना, पूजा करना, अंगों पर एक-एक करके पवित्र अक्षर रखना: कुछ भी नहीं आता। बात अज्ञान पर गर्व की नहीं है। यह एक सच्चा लेखा-जोखा है जो खाली निकलता है, और वह खाली सूची जैसी है वैसी ही सौंप दी जाती है। जो बचता है वह दो बार कही गई पंक्ति है: केवल वही पार जाने का रास्ता है।

डॉक्टर के पास आया छोटा बच्चा अपने लक्षण नहीं बता सकता, कोई दवा नहीं जानता, पर्चा नहीं भर सकता। बच्चा बस माँ का आँचल पकड़ लेता है और बात उसी को करने देता है। गायक देवी के सामने ठीक इसी तरह खड़ा है: अर्पित करने को कोई विधि नहीं, बस उसके आँचल पर पकड़।
