Without Merit or Goal

Bhavanyashtakam 4

Meaning · English

I know nothing of merit, nothing of pilgrimage, nothing ever of liberation or merging. I know no devotion, no vow, Mother. You are my refuge, my refuge, you alone, Bhavani.

The speaker goes through the things that are supposed to count and claims none of them. Merit is the credit that good deeds build up. Pilgrimage is travel to holy places. Liberation and dissolution are the final goal, either freedom or being absorbed. Devotion is love for the goddess. Vows are the disciplines that keep that love steady. He says he has never known any of these. He lacks the effort and even the goal. What is left is the Mother, called his refuge twice, and his only one.

A small child at a busy railway station has no ticket, no money, and no idea which platform or which town. None of that worries the child, who simply holds the mother's hand. The speaker has no fare of merit, no route of vows or pilgrimage, no destination, only the hand.
