Meaning · English

I act badly, keep bad company, think crookedly, serve poorly, left good custom for bad habits; my sight and speech are always crooked. You alone are my refuge, Bhavani.

Nearly every word here begins with a prefix meaning bad or bent. The speaker fixes it to everything: the deeds he does, the company he keeps, the way he thinks, the way he serves. He has dropped the good habits his family kept and sunk into poor ones. How he looks at things and how he puts words together are crooked too. The word "always" makes it a whole life, not one bad day. No excuse follows, only the refrain: you alone are my refuge, Bhavani.

A child comes in from the rain soaked and muddy to the knees. She stands at the door holding out both arms, without wiping anything off first. The list works the same way. Every stain is shown at once, and nothing is cleaned up before asking to be taken in.
