Meaning · English

The lord of creatures, Lakshmi's lord, the great lord, king of gods, sun, moon: I never knew them, nor anything else. Always, refuge, you alone are my way, Bhavani.

Six great lords are named: Brahma, lord of all creatures; Vishnu, the husband of Lakshmi; Shiva, the great lord; Indra, king of the gods; the sun who rules the day; and the moon who rules the night. Between them they hold creation, heaven, and the sky by day and by night. The singer says he has never known any of them, not once, and nothing else besides. With none of them known to him, he turns to the one who gives shelter. Only Bhavani is his way.

A child is lost in a busy market. Policemen, shopkeepers and a man in a fine uniform stand nearby, each important in his own place. The child does not know them and does not go to them. He searches the crowd for one face. The great lords are like those strangers in charge. Bhavani is the face he looks for.
