Practice Clears the Sight
Yoga Sutras 2.28
Meaning · English
When the limbs of yoga are practised, impurity dies away. Then knowing begins to glow, and the glow keeps growing until it becomes clear discernment.
Four terms carry this sutra. Anga is a limb, a part of one body. Ashuddhi is impurity, literally not-cleanness. Jnana-dipti joins jnana, knowing, with dipti, a shining, as a lamp shines. Viveka-khyati joins viveka, a separating apart of one thing from another, with khyati, clear seeing. Together they mean discernment. Patanjali says that when the limbs of yoga are followed steadily, impurity wears thin. As it thins, the mind's knowing begins to shine. The shining grows by degrees, up to discernment. The word "until" matters: it is a process with an end point, not a sudden event. The sutra answers a problem raised just before it. Patanjali has named discernment as the way out of suffering, and the reader naturally asks how it is reached. His answer is practice that clears away what clouds it. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, says the limbs destroy impurity the way an axe cuts wood, and that the light of knowing grows in step with the impurity removed. Later commentators follow him closely and add detail about the stages. They do not change the plain sense.
A window that has gone grey with dust still lets in some daylight. Each wipe of the cloth lets in more, until the glass is clear and the garden is plain to see. The dust is the impurity, the wiping is the practice, and the clear pane is discernment. The light was outside the whole time.
1. Pick one small, steady practice for this week: five minutes of sitting quietly at the same hour each day, in the same spot. 2. Do it daily, even on days it feels like nothing. The sutra speaks of steady following, not of good sessions. 3. Each evening, recall one moment when your thinking was clouded and one when it was clear. Just notice them. Do not judge them. 4. At the end of the week, look back over what you noticed.
