Meaning · English
The eight limbs of yoga are: restraints, observances, bodily seat, mastery of breath, drawing the senses inward, holding the mind on one place, an unbroken staying with that one thing, and full absorption.
Three words carry the sutra. Anga means a limb, a part of a living body. The eight are parts of one practice, not eight separate practices. Yama means a restraint, a holding back from harm. Samadhi means a putting together, a full joining of the mind with its object. It is the last of the eight and the place the list arrives. The names run in order: restraints, observances, seat, breath, drawing the senses inward, holding the mind on one place, unbroken staying with it, absorption. The sutra only names them. Each is unfolded later. Patanjali says this because the sutra before it promised that following the means of yoga wears impurity away, up to clear discernment, yet never said what the means are. This is the answer, and it begins outwardly, with conduct and body, and moves inward to the mind. Vyasa's commentary takes the list as the means just promised and treats each limb as a real help toward the stilled mind. Later commentators mostly follow him on this point.
A tree has one trunk and eight branches. Each branch bends its own way and carries its own leaves, yet none is a separate tree. Cut one away and the tree is lopsided. The eight limbs are the branches, and yoga is the single tree they grow from.
1. Write the eight names on a small card, in order, and read them slowly once this morning. 2. Tonight, sit on a chair or the floor for three minutes. Notice only how you are seated: back, hands, feet. 3. For two more minutes, notice your breath moving in and out without changing it. 4. Before sleep, ask which of the eight you already touched today, even by accident.
