Maitreya spoke to the sage Parasara. "Respected sir, you have told me everything I asked: the earth, the seas, the mountains and rivers, the planets, and the three worlds that rest on Vishnu. You have told me that holy knowledge is the highest thing. You also promised to tell me about Bharata, protector of the earth. He lived at the holy place of Salagram, and his mind was always fixed on Vasudeva. He lived in a sacred place and was devoted to Hari. Why, then, did he fail to reach final liberation? And why was he born again as a Brahmin? Please tell me." Parasara answered, "Maitreya, the king lived at Salagram for a long time, his mind wholly given to God. For his kindness and his other virtues he was counted first among the good, and he gained complete control over his mind."

Parasara went on. "The king was always repeating the names: Yajnesa, Achyuta, Govinda, Madhava, Ananta, Keshava, Krishna, Vishnu, Hrishikesa. He spoke nothing else, even in his dreams, and thought of nothing but those names and what they mean. He took fuel, flowers and holy grass for worship, and kept no other observance. One day he went to the river Mahanadi to bathe, and afterwards he stayed there at his prayers. A doe heavy with young came out of the forest to drink. While she drank, a lion roared, a sound terrible enough to frighten every creature. The doe leapt from the water onto the bank in terror. The leap brought her fawn into the world at once, and it fell into the river."

"The king saw the newborn fawn being swept away by the current. He caught it and pulled it out, so it did not drown. But the doe had hurt herself in that violent leap, and the hurt was fatal. She lay down on the bank and died. The king, who had given up his throne, picked the fawn up in his arms and carried it back to the hermitage. There he fed it and cared for it every day, and under his care it grew strong. It played around the hermitage and grazed on the grass nearby. When it was afraid of a tiger, it ran to him. In the mornings it wandered off, and in the evenings it came back and played in Bharata's leafy hut."

"Bharata's mind went wherever the fawn went, and he could think of nothing else. He had cut every tie to friends, kingdom, son and wife, yet he grew far too attached to this one animal. When it stayed away too long, he imagined wolves had taken it, or a tiger had eaten it, or a lion had killed it. He would cry out, 'The earth is marked everywhere with the prints of its hooves. Where is the fawn that was born for my delight? How happy I would be if he came back from the forest. I felt his small antlers rubbing against my arm. These tufts of sacred grass, nibbled at the tips by his new teeth, look like pious boys chanting the Shama-Veda.'"

"His face lit up whenever the fawn came near. His steady meditation was broken, though he had renounced family, wealth and kingdom. When the fawn strayed far, his mind followed, and only when it was still did his mind grow still. In time he was wholly under its power, and the fawn watched him with tearful eyes, like a son mourning a father. When the king died, he saw only the fawn before him, and nothing else. Because of that last thought, he was born again in the Jambumarga forest as a deer, but he remembered his former life. That memory turned him from the world. He left his mother and went back to Salagram, where he lived on dry grass and leaves, atoning for the acts that had brought him to that birth. When he died, he was born a Brahmin, still remembering his past life, in a devout and renowned family of strict ascetics. He had true knowledge and understood the spirit of all sacred writings. He saw the soul as distinct from Prakriti, matter. Knowing the self, he saw the gods and all other beings as the same."
