Steady Till the Last Hour
Bhagavad Gita 2.72
Meaning · English
This, Arjun, is the state of God-realization. Having reached it, a person is never deluded again. Established in it even at the hour of death, one attains liberation from Maya.
Three terms carry the verse. Brahmi sthiti is a standing place in Brahman: sthiti means a stand, a footing, and brahmi means of God. Vimuhyati comes from a root meaning to be bewildered, to lose the thread, and Krishna says such a person is never bewildered again. Nirvana means a blowing out, like a flame going quiet, and here it is the end of Maya's hold. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person he has just described, steady and wanting nothing, is standing in this place. Once a person has reached it, confusion does not return. Krishna adds that anyone established in it even at the hour of death reaches liberation. He gives no timetable and sets no age limit. The reason is Arjuna's own bewilderment, which has run through the whole chapter. Krishna wants him to know that the steadiness is real, that it holds, and that it is not lost by arriving late. He asks Arjuna to take it as a state to stand in, not a mood to visit. Shankara reads the verse as praising renunciation: if one established in Brahman at the last moment is freed, how much more one who lives in it all along. Ramanuja reads the state as the steadiness of one who knows the self, reached through disciplined action. Madhva reads Brahman as Vishnu, and the liberation as reaching him.
A man lost for hours in the lanes of an old town finally climbs the hill above it. From there he sees the whole street plan at once. He can walk back down and not be lost in those lanes again, because he knows how they lie. The hill is the standing place, and the lanes are Maya's confusion.
1. Once today, when you catch yourself hurrying toward something you want, stop for three slow breaths before you reach for it. 2. Notice what the wanting felt like in your body, and whether it eased even a little. Do not judge it. 3. Tonight, spend two minutes remembering one moment today when you stayed level. Write one line about it. 4. Do this for a week. Notice whether the level moments come a little more often, and whether they hold when you are tired.
A woman sits through the night beside her dying grandmother in a hospice room. The old woman is calm and asks only for a little water and for the lamp to be left low. The granddaughter sees that this calm did not arrive tonight. It was built over decades, in small ordinary choices, and it is still there when everything else has been taken away. Krishna's teaching about the last hour starts from the same sight. A steadiness that has been practiced holds at the end, and the verse says it holds even if it was found late. In that room, the granddaughter can stop asking whether her grandmother is afraid enough or peaceful enough, and simply stay, quiet, hand in hand. Ordinary experience confirms one part of this: habits show most when we are tired, and the end of life is the tiredest hour. The verse does not promise that dying is painless, that grief will be small, or that a calm person needs no nurse or doctor. Good care for the body and the teaching on steadiness sit side by side.
