A Plea for Clarity

Bhagavad Gita 3.2

Meaning · English

With words that seem to cross and tangle, you bewilder my mind, as it were. Therefore tell me one thing, decisively, by which I may reach the highest good.

Arjuna is speaking here, and what he says is his own view in that moment. Three words carry it. Buddhi is the intellect, the part of us that weighs and decides. Vyamishra means mixed, tangled together, so the words seem to him to pull two ways. Shreyas is the highest good, what is truly best for him, as opposed to what is merely pleasant. Arjuna has just heard Krishna praise the steady intellect and also urge him to act, and the two sound opposed to him. So he says his judgment is bewildered, and he adds 'as it were', a small softening: he feels muddled, and he is not claiming Krishna has misled him. His request is exact. He asks for one thing, said decisively, by which he can reach the highest good. He does not want a survey of options. He wants a single answer he can stand on, because a man about to fight cannot act while divided. Shankara reads the 'as it were' as showing the confusion is only apparent, in Arjuna's mind and not in Krishna's words. Ramanuja takes the plea as a request to learn which means actually leads to the good, with action done as yoga being the answer to come. Madhva takes it as Arjuna drawing out the fuller teaching, not as true despair.

A traveller stands at a fork in the road while two helpful locals point two different ways, each speaking kindly and at length. He does not doubt their kindness. He only needs one direction he can walk. Arjuna is that traveller, and his request for one decisive word is the wish to leave the fork and start walking.

1. Today, pick one decision where two good pieces of advice seem to pull against each other. 2. Write both in a single plain sentence each, on paper, taking about five minutes. 3. Ask the person who gave the advice one question: 'If you had to name one thing, which?' 4. Notice whether the muddle was in their words or in your own hurry to be certain. 5. Act on the one answer for a day before asking again.

A woman stands in a hospital corridor at night. One surgeon has told her father to operate now. Another says to wait a week. Both sound sure, and she feels her head fill with static. Arjuna's plea gives her a way through. First, she admits the confusion openly, as he does, without pretending to understand. Second, she stops asking for everything and asks for one thing. She might say to each doctor, 'If he were your father, what would you choose, and why?' Third, she asks for the reason in plain words and writes it down, so that she is choosing between two clear sentences and not two fogs. Ordinary experience bears out that a mind under fear takes in less, and that a short, direct question is easier to answer than a wide one. The plea does not promise that the answer will be painless or that the choice will be right. It does not replace the doctors, and it leaves the fear and the weight of deciding where they were. It only turns a tangle into a single question that can be answered.
