Two Roads, Long Taught

Bhagavad Gita 3.3

Meaning · English

The Blessed Lord said: Sinless one, in this world I explained long ago two kinds of faith: the path of knowledge for those inclined to contemplation, and the path of action for the yogis.

Krishna starts answering the question Arjuna put to him. Three words carry the verse. Nishtha means a standing-place, a settled footing, here translated as faith. Jnana is knowledge, the path of thinking the self through. Karma is action, and karma yoga is action done as a discipline. Krishna tells Arjuna there are two such footings in this world, and that he has taught both before. The words are not new, and they were not meant to confuse. He calls Arjuna sinless, so the question is honest and no fault is being charged. He then names who each path suits. Knowledge belongs to those whose nature leans toward contemplation. Action belongs to the yogis, those who work at being steady while they act. The reason is that people differ, so one road cannot fit every walker. Arjuna asked for a single answer, and Krishna starts by showing that the teaching has two doors. Shankara reads the two as meant for different people, the renouncer and the householder, with knowledge as the final means of liberation. Ramanuja reads them as joined, action being the way into knowledge of the self. Madhva reads both as resting on knowing God's supremacy, with liberation coming by his grace.

A hill has two footpaths to the top. One climbs straight and steep through the trees. The other winds along the slope and gives more company. Each is old, and hikers use both. The hill is the one goal, the paths are the two ways Krishna names, and the hiker's legs are the temperament that decides which suits.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down two tasks you did this week that left you steadier, not drained. 2. Mark each one: did you reach it by thinking and quiet, or by doing with your hands and moving about? 3. Tomorrow, give your next hard problem to the way that suited you, whether that is sitting with it first or starting the work. 4. Notice, without judging, how a friend or relative goes about the same kind of problem differently.

A woman sits beside her father's hospital bed the day after his stroke. Her brother is in the corridor, phoning, filling forms, arranging the next scan. She is quiet, watching her father's breathing and remembering. She feels she is doing nothing next to him. The verse would change what she counts. Krishna tells Arjuna that two footings exist and that each has its own kind of person. Her brother's way is action. Hers leans toward stillness and understanding. Step by step: she stops measuring herself against his pace, she sees that her steady presence is also a work, and she asks him which task she can take without forcing herself into his style. They end up dividing the load by temperament. Ordinary experience confirms that people differ, and that a task done in a way that suits you is easier to keep up. The verse does not heal her father, ease her fear, or replace the doctors who are treating him.
