Knowing Only How to Follow
Devi Aparadha Kshamapana Stotram 1
Meaning · English
I know no mantra, no yantra, no hymn; no way to call you or meditate on you; no gestures, no lament. Mother, I know only this: following you removes suffering.
The speaker lists everything a worshipper is supposed to know and admits to none of it. A mantra is a sacred phrase repeated in prayer. A yantra is a drawn diagram used as a focus for worship. Then come hymns, the formal invitation that opens a ritual, meditation on her form, the stories told in her praise, the hand gestures of worship, even the right way to cry out to her. Every skill is missing. One piece of knowledge is left: following the Mother takes suffering away.
A small child in a crowded market cannot read the signs, count money or name the streets. It holds the end of its mother's sari and walks where she walks. That grip is its only skill, and it is enough to get the child home. Following the Mother works the same way: no technique, only staying close.
