Bad Son, Never Bad Mother

Devi Aparadha Kshamapana Stotram 2

Meaning · English

Ignorant of the rules, short of money, lazy, unable to do what was asked, I fell from your feet. Forgive, Mother. Bad sons are sometimes born; a bad mother, never.

The singer gives four plain reasons for falling short. He did not know how the worship was meant to be done. He had no money for offerings. He was lazy. And some of what was required was simply beyond him. He hides none of it. Then he asks her to forgive, calling her the mother who lifts everyone up, and the gracious one. The last line carries the whole request: children can turn out badly, but a mother does not stop being a mother.

A grown son who has not phoned in months, who missed the festival and brought no gift, turns up at the door. His mother does not ask for the list of reasons first. She is already putting rice on a plate. The hymn leans on that habit: the lapse is real, but the door was never shut.
