पृथिव्यां पुत्रास्ते जननि बहवः सन्ति सरलाः परं तेषां मध्ये विरलतरलोऽहं तव सुतः । मदीयोऽयं त्यागः समुचितमिदं नो तव शिवे कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति

Meaning · English

Many upright children are yours on earth, Mother; I am the unsteady one among them. Leaving me does not suit you, kind one. Sons go bad; mothers never do.

The speaker sizes himself up honestly. The Mother has plenty of children on earth who are simple and straight. He is not one of them. He is the rare odd one, restless and hard to rely on. Then comes the turn. He does not argue that he deserves to be kept. He says that dropping him would not fit who she is. He calls her the auspicious one. The closing line, repeated from verse 2, rests the whole case on her nature, not his.

A mother at the gate at dusk, counting children in from the street. Five come in clean and on time. The sixth is missing, as usual, probably up a tree with torn trousers. She does not shut the gate on five. Having many easy children does not make the difficult one spare to her.

धरती पर तुम्हारे बहुत से सीधे-सच्चे बच्चे हैं, माँ; उनमें डाँवाडोल मैं ही हूँ। मुझे छोड़ देना तुम्हें शोभा नहीं देता, कृपामयी। बेटे बिगड़ जाते हैं; माँएँ कभी नहीं बिगड़तीं।

वक्ता ईमानदारी से खुद को परखता है। धरती पर माँ के ढेरों बच्चे हैं जो सीधे और सरल हैं। वह उनमें से नहीं है। वह विरला बेमेल बच्चा है, बेचैन और जिस पर भरोसा करना कठिन है। फिर मोड़ आता है। वह यह तर्क नहीं देता कि वह रखे जाने योग्य है। वह कहता है कि उसे छोड़ देना माँ के स्वभाव से मेल नहीं खाएगा। वह उसे मंगलमयी कहकर पुकारता है। अंतिम पंक्ति, जो दूसरे श्लोक से दोहराई गई है, पूरी बात वक्ता के नहीं, माँ के स्वभाव पर टिका देती है।

साँझ के समय द्वार पर खड़ी एक माँ, गली से भीतर आते बच्चों को गिनती हुई। पाँच बच्चे साफ़-सुथरे और समय पर आ जाते हैं। छठा हमेशा की तरह गायब है, शायद फटी पतलून पहने किसी पेड़ पर चढ़ा हुआ। वह पाँच पर ही द्वार बंद नहीं कर देती। बहुत से आसान बच्चे होने से वह कठिन बच्चा उसके लिए फालतू नहीं हो जाता।
