जगन्मातर्मातस्तव चरणसेवा न रचिता न वा दत्तं देवि द्रविणमपि भूयस्तव मया । तथापि त्वं स्नेहं मयि निरुपमं यत्प्रकुरुषे कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति
Meaning · English
Mother of the world, I never served your feet, nor gave you much wealth. Yet you love me beyond compare. A bad son may be born; a bad mother, never.
The singer names the two usual ways people try to win a goddess's favour. One is serving at her feet in worship. The other is bringing offerings of money. He admits he has done neither, or not in any amount worth mentioning. Still, her affection for him has no equal. The love he names is the tender love of family, not a payment for work done. So the refrain lands differently this time. He is not begging her to stay kind. He is noticing that she already is.
A boy comes home late. He has done no chores and brought nothing back with him, yet he finds a plate kept warm on the stove. Nobody checked what he contributed before setting it aside. The warm plate is the Mother's love, kept ready for him before anyone counted his worship or his gifts.

जगत की माता, मैंने कभी तुम्हारे चरणों की सेवा नहीं की, न ही तुम्हें बहुत धन दिया। फिर भी तुम मुझसे बेजोड़ प्रेम करती हो। कुपुत्र जन्म ले सकता है; कुमाता कभी नहीं।
गायक उन दो सामान्य उपायों का नाम लेता है जिनसे लोग किसी देवी की कृपा पाने का यत्न करते हैं। एक है पूजा में उसके चरणों की सेवा। दूसरा है धन की भेंट चढ़ाना। वह मानता है कि उसने दोनों में से कुछ नहीं किया, या इतना नहीं किया जो कहने लायक हो। फिर भी उस पर देवी के स्नेह की कोई बराबरी नहीं। जिस प्रेम की वह बात करता है वह परिवार का कोमल प्रेम है, किए गए काम का मेहनताना नहीं। इसलिए इस बार टेक का अर्थ अलग ढंग से मन में उतरता है। वह उससे दयालु बने रहने की विनती नहीं कर रहा। वह देख रहा है कि वह पहले से ही दयालु है।
एक लड़का देर से घर लौटता है। उसने घर का कोई काम नहीं किया और साथ में कुछ लाया भी नहीं, फिर भी उसे चूल्हे पर गरम रखी एक थाली मिलती है। उसे अलग रखने से पहले किसी ने यह नहीं जाँचा कि उसने क्या योगदान दिया। गरम थाली माँ का प्रेम है, जो किसी के उसकी पूजा या उसकी भेंटें गिनने से पहले ही उसके लिए तैयार रखा गया था।
