Worn out by so many rituals, I left the gods. Now past eighty-five, Mother of Ganesha, if your mercy fails, with no support, where do I go for shelter?

He admits he gave up on the other gods. He did not argue with them. He was overwhelmed, tangled up in all the different kinds of service each one asked for, and he let them go. Now he is past eighty-five. There is no time left to go back and do it properly. Everything rests on one 'if': if her kindness does not come now, he has nothing left to hold. He calls her the mother of Ganesha, a mother who already has a child, and asks where else he could go.

Picture an old man at a bus stop late at night. Earlier buses came and went, and he waved them all on, unsure which one to take. Now only the last bus is due. If it does not stop, he has no way home. The waved-off buses are the gods he left, and the last bus is her mercy.

इतनी सारी पूजा-विधियों से थककर मैंने देवताओं को छोड़ दिया। अब पचासी पार कर चुका हूँ, गणेश की माँ, यदि तुम्हारी कृपा न हुई तो बिना किसी सहारे के मैं शरण के लिए कहाँ जाऊँ?

वह मानता है कि उसने बाकी देवताओं से आस छोड़ दी। उसने उनसे कोई बहस नहीं की। वह घबरा गया था, हर देवता जिस-जिस तरह की सेवा माँगता था उन सबमें उलझ गया था, और उसने उन्हें जाने दिया। अब वह पचासी पार कर चुका है। लौटकर सब कुछ ठीक से करने का समय अब नहीं बचा। सब कुछ एक 'यदि' पर टिका है: यदि देवी की करुणा अभी नहीं आई, तो उसके पास थामने को कुछ नहीं बचेगा। वह उसे गणेश की माँ कहता है, ऐसी माँ जिसकी पहले से एक संतान है, और पूछता है कि वह और कहाँ जा सकता है।

रात देर गए किसी बस-अड्डे पर खड़े एक बूढ़े आदमी की कल्पना कीजिए। पहले की बसें आईं और चली गईं, और उसने हाथ हिलाकर सबको आगे जाने दिया, क्योंकि उसे पक्का नहीं था कि कौन-सी बस ले। अब केवल आखिरी बस आनी बाकी है। अगर वह नहीं रुकी, तो उसके पास घर लौटने का कोई रास्ता नहीं। जिन बसों को उसने आगे जाने दिया, वही वे देवता हैं जिन्हें उसने छोड़ दिया, और आखिरी बस देवी की कृपा है।
