What Mere Hearing Does

Devi Aparadha Kshamapana Stotram 6

Meaning · English

Aparna, when your mantra's syllables merely reach the ear, the outcaste speaks sweet as honey and the pauper roams fearless, rich in gold. Who, Mother, knows what chanting brings?

The poet picks the two people a village would least expect to rise: an outcaste, shunned for what he eats, and a man with nothing. Let the sounds of the Goddess's mantra simply fall on their ears, and the first talks with a sweetness people want to hear, while the second walks around for years, unafraid, with gold to spare. That is the result of only hearing. Then the question: if hearing does this, who could measure what proper, careful chanting would do?

Walk past a bakery in the morning and your clothes carry the smell of bread for an hour, though you bought nothing and never touched the oven. The hymn treats the mantra the same way: passing within earshot of its sound is enough to mark a person, before any skill in reciting it.
