Meaning · English
Pyre ash for paste, poison for food, sky for clothes, snakes at his throat, skull in hand, lord of creatures and of ghosts, yet he is Lord of the World. Bhavani, marrying you did that.
Shankara lists everything about Shiva that would make a family refuse him as a son-in-law. He rubs himself with ash from cremation grounds, swallows poison, goes naked with only the open sky as clothing, wears matted hair and a serpent king for a necklace, carries a skull, and is lord only of creatures and ghosts. By any ordinary measure he owns nothing. Yet he holds the single highest seat, Lord of the World. The reason given is one thing: Bhavani took his hand. His standing is the fruit of the marriage.
A plain steel band costs almost nothing. Set one good diamond in it, and the whole ring is suddenly called precious, insured, and locked in a safe. Nobody is paying for the steel. Shiva is seen the same way: the ash, the snakes and the skull stay exactly as they are, and her hand is what makes him Lord.
