Nothing Wanted but Names
Devi Aparadha Kshamapana Stotram 8
Meaning · English
I want neither release nor worldly riches, moon-faced one, neither knowledge nor pleasure. So I ask, Mother: let my life pass repeating Mridani, Rudrani, Shiva, Shiva, Bhavani.
The singer clears away everything people usually pray for. Release from the cycle of births is not wanted. Riches and standing in the world are not wanted. Deep spiritual knowledge is not needed, and comfort is not asked for again. One request is left. Whatever life, or lives, remain, let them pass with her names being said: the gracious one, Rudra's consort, Shiva, Shiva, Bhavani. Saying the names is not a way to get something else. It is the whole wish.
A small child in a crowded market is offered sweets, a balloon, a turn on the swing. She shakes her head at each one and keeps hold of her mother's hand, saying 'Ma' now and then as they walk. The treats are release, wealth, knowledge and comfort. The hand and the word are what the singer keeps.
