Meaning · English

I never worshipped you by rule with offerings, and what harsh words have I not spoken? Dark Mother, if you pity me, helpless, the credit is yours alone.

Two admissions come first. He never worshipped her properly and never laid out the many offerings a rite asks for. Worse, his mind ran to harsh thoughts, and there is little his rough words have not done. Then he turns. He calls her the Dark One and himself helpless, a man with no one to protect him. If she shows him any kindness at all, it starts with her. It suits her to give it, and all of it belongs to her, because nothing on his side produced it.

A small child spends the evening shouting and throwing peas on the floor. At bedtime the mother still wipes his face and tucks him in. Nobody in the room thinks the child earned it. They think well of her. The poet places himself as that child: whatever gentleness reaches him reflects on her, not on him.
