आपत्सु मग्नः स्मरणं त्वदीयं करोमि दुर्गे करुणार्णवेशि । नैतच्छठत्वं मम भावयेथाः क्षुधातृषार्ता जननीं स्मरन्ति

Meaning · English

Sunk in trouble, I remember you, Durga, ruler of the ocean of mercy. Do not count this as cunning in me. The hungry and thirsty think of their mother.

The singer admits something awkward: he turns to Durga mostly when he is drowning in trouble. The word for his state is sunk, meaning under water, not mildly bothered. He calls her queen of an ocean of compassion, so one ocean answers another. Then he asks her not to read his calling as cunning, a calculated move to get something. His defense is a plain fact: a hungry or thirsty child thinks of its mother. That is not scheming. It is need knowing where to go.

Someone slipping on an icy step grabs the handrail without deciding to. Nobody watching calls that using the railing, or says they should have held it all along. The hand simply goes to what will hold. The singer's memory of Durga in trouble works the same way: a reach, not a plan.

संकट में डूबा मैं तुम्हें याद करता हूँ, दुर्गा, करुणा के सागर की स्वामिनी। इसे मेरी चालाकी मत समझना। भूखे-प्यासे अपनी माँ को ही याद करते हैं।

गायक एक असहज बात मान लेता है: वह दुर्गा की ओर अधिकतर तभी मुड़ता है जब वह संकट में डूब रहा होता है। अपनी दशा के लिए उसका शब्द है डूबा हुआ, यानी पानी के नीचे, थोड़ा-बहुत परेशान नहीं। वह उन्हें करुणा के सागर की रानी कहता है, सो एक सागर दूसरे सागर को उत्तर देता है। फिर वह विनती करता है कि वे उसकी पुकार को चालाकी न समझें, कुछ पाने के लिए सोची-समझी चाल न मानें। उसका बचाव एक सीधा-सा सच है: भूखा या प्यासा बच्चा अपनी माँ को याद करता है। यह कोई जोड़-तोड़ नहीं है। यह आवश्यकता है, जो जानती है कि कहाँ जाना है।

बर्फ़ से ढकी सीढ़ी पर फिसलता कोई व्यक्ति बिना सोचे-विचारे हत्था थाम लेता है। देखने वाला कोई भी इसे हत्थे का उपयोग करना नहीं कहता, न यह कहता है कि उसे सदा से उसे पकड़े रहना चाहिए था। हाथ बस उसी ओर चला जाता है जो थाम लेगा। संकट में गायक का दुर्गा को याद करना भी ठीक ऐसा ही है: हाथ बढ़ाना, कोई योजना नहीं।
