जगदम्ब विचित्रमत्र किं परिपूर्णा करुणास्ति चेन्मयि । अपराधपरम्परापरं न हि माता समुपेक्षते सुतम्

Mother of the world, is it any wonder that your compassion toward me is full? A mother does not turn away from her son, though fault follows fault.

The singer asks a question that answers itself. If the Mother of the world is full of compassion for him, what is surprising about that? Nothing. Her compassion is described as full, filled to the brim, not a portion rationed out. Then comes the reason: a mother does not ignore her child. The child here is no model son. His wrongs come in a long chain, one leading into the next, and still she does not look away. Her mercy rests on her being a mother, not on his record.

A toddler at the kitchen table knocks over his milk, then drops the spoon, then smears the puddle across the floor. His mother wipes it up and lifts him onto her hip anyway. She is not tallying spills. That is the picture: the faults are real and repeated, and the holding does not depend on them stopping.

जगत की माँ, यदि मुझ पर तुम्हारी करुणा पूरी है तो इसमें आश्चर्य ही क्या? माँ अपने बेटे से मुँह नहीं मोड़ती, भले ही एक दोष के पीछे दूसरा दोष आता रहे।

गायक ऐसा प्रश्न पूछता है जिसका उत्तर उसी में छिपा है। यदि जगत की माँ उस पर करुणा से भरी है, तो इसमें आश्चर्य क्या? कुछ भी नहीं। उसकी करुणा को पूरी कहा गया है, लबालब भरी हुई, नाप-तौलकर बाँटा गया कोई हिस्सा नहीं। फिर कारण आता है: माँ अपने बच्चे की उपेक्षा नहीं करती। यहाँ बच्चा कोई आदर्श बेटा नहीं है। उसकी भूलें एक लंबी कड़ी में आती हैं, एक से दूसरी निकलती हुई, फिर भी वह आँख नहीं फेरती। उसकी दया उसके माँ होने पर टिकी है, बेटे के लेखे-जोखे पर नहीं।

रसोई की मेज़ पर बैठा एक नन्हा बच्चा अपना दूध गिरा देता है, फिर चम्मच गिरा देता है, फिर फैले दूध को फ़र्श पर पोत देता है। उसकी माँ सब पोंछ देती है और फिर भी उसे उठाकर कमर पर टिका लेती है। वह गिरे दूध का हिसाब नहीं रख रही। यही चित्र है: दोष सच्चे हैं और बार-बार होते हैं, और गोद में उठाए रखना उनके रुकने पर निर्भर नहीं है।
