The Five Observances
Yoga Sutras 2.32

Meaning · English
The observances are five: cleanness, contentment, tapas (disciplined effort), study of oneself and of sacred teaching, and laying down one's actions before Ishvara.
Niyama comes from the root yam, to hold or rein in, with ni, inward. It means an observance, something kept up daily. The earlier list restrains conduct toward others. This one names what a person maintains in themselves. Tapas means heat, a burning. It is effort that costs something, taken on freely. Svadhyaya joins sva, own or self, with adhyaya, going into. It is study, both of sacred teaching and of oneself. Ishvara-pranidhana means laying one's actions down before Ishvara, the Lord of these sutras. The other two terms are plain: shauca is cleanness, and santosha is contentment, wanting no more than what is at hand. Patanjali names five observances, and they are the second of the eight limbs. He gives them after the restraints because a person who has stopped harming others still has a restless mind to work with. These are the daily habits that work on it. Vyasa's Bhashya reads cleanness as outer washing and clean food, and as the washing away of the mind's stains. He reads tapas as bearing pairs like heat and cold, hunger and thirst. He takes study as reading texts of liberation and repeating Om. He takes the last as placing all one's actions in the supreme Lord. Later commentators mostly follow him.
A house stays livable only through small daily upkeep: the floor swept, the stove lit, the pantry stocked, the household book opened, the keys handed to the one who runs it. Patanjali's five observances are that upkeep, done each day for the mind, so that it stays a place where yoga can be practised.
1. Tonight, wash your hands and face slowly, and clear one small surface, such as a table or a bedside shelf. 2. At one meal tomorrow, eat without a screen. Before the last bite, notice whether you already want something else. 3. Choose one small discomfort you can bear on purpose today, such as waiting without checking your phone for five minutes. 4. Read one page of a text you respect. Then write one line about what you did today. 5. At day's end, say aloud what you offer up of the day's work.
