The Great Vow

Yoga Sutras 2.31

Meaning · English

Not cut off by birth, place, time, or circumstance, and reaching everywhere, these restraints are the great vow.

Three terms carry the sutra. Avacchinna means cut off, bounded, fenced round. Anavacchinna is the opposite: not fenced. Sarvabhauma comes from bhumi, ground or earth, so it means holding across the whole ground, with no exception. Mahavrata is maha, great, and vrata, a vow. The sutra lists four fences that can limit the restraints: jati, the kind of birth one has; desha, the place; kala, the time; and samaya, the occasion or duty at hand. Patanjali says the restraints stay unfenced by all four. They are the great vow because no situation excuses them. Patanjali adds this because the five restraints just named could be read as rules with exceptions: harmless except toward enemies, truthful except when it pays. The sutra closes that door. Vyasa's Bhashya gives examples. A hunter harms only fish, only in certain places, only on certain days, and that is a limited non-injury. Practised with none of those limits, it is the great vow. Later commentators follow this reading and treat the vow as one that holds in every situation, at every level of practice.

Picture a lamp set in a room with every door and window open. Its light does not check who is standing there or what hour it is before it spreads. The restraints are meant to work like that lamp: held the same toward everyone, in every place, at every time.

1. Choose one restraint from the list, such as truthfulness, and hold it for one day. 2. Notice the places where you want an exception: with a stranger, at work, when tired, when no one would find out. 3. Write down each exception you notice, without arguing with it. 4. In the evening, read the list and see which of the four fences each exception used: who, where, when, or what was happening.
