The Light Behind Light

Katha Upanishad 2.2.15

No sun lights that place, no moon or stars, no lightning, and certainly no fire of ours. It shines first, and all else gleams in its wake. By its radiance this whole world is made bright.

Yama is answering the question Nachiketas has just raised: does the highest reality have a light of its own, or does it borrow one? Three words carry the answer. Bhati means to shine, to give light. Anubhati joins anu, meaning after or along, to the same root: to shine following, to gleam only because something else has shone. Bhasa is radiance, the light itself. Yama says the sun, moon, stars, lightning and any fire do not light that reality. Their brightness is the kind that must be kindled and can go out. Then he turns it around. Everything else shines after it, in anubhati, and the whole world is lit by its bhasa. So the question about borrowed light has a plain answer: the borrowing runs the other way. Yama gives this reason so the boy will stop looking for the highest among lit things, however grand. The lamps, he says, are already its guests. Shankara reads the light as the conscious Self, the atman, the knowing presence in every being. In his reading, the sun and the rest appear only to that awareness, as an iron ball glows because fire has entered it. He does not take it as a physical light.

A lantern is carried into a dark room. The table, the cups and the faces all appear, and none of them gives any light. Take the lantern out and they vanish. The lit things are the sun, stars and fire. The lantern is what makes anything appear at all.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes in a room with one lamp on. Look at three objects and notice that each is visible only because of the lamp. 2. Switch the lamp off and stay for one more minute. Notice that you still know the room is dark. Something is still aware. 3. Once tomorrow, while looking at something ordinary, a tree or a cup of tea, ask quietly: what is it that is aware of this? Wait a few breaths. No answer is needed.

A power cut hits a flat at night, and a mother feels her way to a drawer for the torch. Her child is feverish in the next room. The beam finds his face, and she sees his flushed cheeks and his breathing. The verse would change what she notices in that moment. First, the torch is not the seeing. Second, before the light came on she already knew he was there, and she already knew it was dark. Yama's teaching points at that knowing, which stays the same whether the room is bright or black, and says every other light is seen by it. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: we are aware of darkness as well as of light. Today's physiology would add that sight needs light, an eye and a working brain. The verse does not argue with that. It speaks of what the Upanishad calls the Self, as its own teaching. It does not bring the power back or bring down the fever. A child with a high temperature still needs a doctor's advice.
