Meaning · English

Tiryang Mukha Ekapada Paschimottanasana: tiryang, turned aside; mukha, face; eka, one; pada, foot or leg; paschima, the west or back; uttana, stretched; asana, seat. The one-leg-folded-back forward bend, the turned-aside one-leg stretch of the back.

Take the name apart first. Tiryang means turned across or aside, mukha is face, eka is one, pada is foot or leg. Paschima means west, and uttana means stretched out. The yogi's habit was to face east, toward the sunrise, so the whole back of the body is the west side. Asana is a seat. Together the name says: a seat that stretches the back of the body, with one leg turned aside. This posture is not described in the Pradipika, the Gheranda Samhita or the Shiva Samhita. It is modern postural yoga, codified in the twentieth century in the Mysore line of Krishnamacharya and the schools that grew from it. Its frame in the old tradition is Yoga Sutras 2.46 to 2.48: a seat that is steady and easy, effort loosening, the mind resting on the infinite. The old books do teach a forward bend of the back, with both legs straight. This version keeps that shape and changes one leg. One leg is folded back, so the pelvis has to settle evenly while the other leg is reached over. The posture is asking for balance more than for depth. It asks for equal weight on both sitting bones, a slow breath, and a head that comes down only as far as the body allows. The sutras name this same quality: steadiness with ease, not reaching for a picture of the pose.

1. Sit on the floor with both legs straight in front of you. Lengthen the spine upward. 2. Fold one leg back, so that the foot rests beside the hip on the same side. The knee points forward, in line with the thigh, and the other leg stays straight. 3. Breathe in and raise both arms overhead, with the ribs lifting. 4. Breathe out. Fold forward from the hips over the straight leg. Hold the foot with your hands, and bring the head toward the knee as far as you can without forcing. 5. Stay here. Keep the weight even on both sitting bones. Breathe slowly and quietly, with the eyes soft and looking down along the leg. 6. If you tilt toward the straight leg, sit on a folded blanket under that hip until the pelvis feels level. 7. Breathe in. Come up slowly, with the spine rising last, and stretch the folded leg out in front of you. 8. Now fold the other leg back and do the other side in the same way. 9. Rest with both legs straight in front of you. The fold starts at the hip joints, not in the waist or the neck. The folded knee and ankle stay quiet. The head is the last thing to come down, and nothing about the depth should be forced.

The straight leg takes the main stretch along its back: the hamstrings behind the thigh, the calf, and the long muscles of the lower back. As you fold, the pelvis tips forward over the thigh bones. The spine lengthens and rounds a little, and the muscles of the front of the thigh and the abdomen hold the shape. The folded leg is in a deep bend at the knee and a turn at the hip. That leg stretches the front of the thigh and the ankle, and it makes the pelvis want to tilt to one side. This is why the sitting bones need watching. The breath is slow because a fold compresses the belly and the lower ribs. A long exhale gives the fold its room, and a steady inhale lifts the spine before the next movement. For the mind, the shape is quiet. The eyes are lowered, the hands are busy holding, and attention stays on the even weight and the breathing. The tradition would say the breath here is a matter of prana flowing along the back channel of the body. That is the tradition's account, not physiology.

The Pradipika, for the two-legged forward stretch, claims that it moves the breath along the back of the body, kindles the digestive fire, and brings steadiness. This one-leg version has no verse of its own. The schools that teach it say it lengthens the back of the legs and the spine, frees the hips, and quiets the mind through a slow, inward fold. Teachers in the Mysore line also say that working one side at a time shows the difference between the right and left halves of the body, so the student learns to notice it without judging.

A man steps off a long overnight train and finds his legs stiff from hours of sitting with his knees bent. A gentle seated fold like this is a reasonable way to move those muscles again. Today's mainstream understanding agrees that slow stretching of the hamstrings and back can improve how far a joint moves, and that slow breathing with attention on the body tends to feel calming. That is general knowledge about gentle exercise and does not belong to this pose alone. What is not established is that a forward bend gives any particular effect on digestion, or that it moves breath along a channel. Prana and the back channel have no modern match, and they stay the tradition's account. Modern physiotherapists would also point out that the folded knee is the part most easily strained. A pose with one leg folded is not better than a plain forward bend, only different. Where a person's body needs a gentler shape, the old advice of ease over depth agrees with current common sense.

This is not medical advice. A teacher can correct what a page cannot, and this posture is learnt with a teacher, not from a page. Stop at any pain, especially in the knee. Take extra care with a knee injury or a stiff knee, a disc problem or sciatica in the lower back, a recent hamstring strain, a recent surgery, high blood pressure, or pregnancy, when the belly leaves little room for the fold. The folded knee should never twist or feel pinched. Do not pull the head down by force or bounce into the fold, and do not hold the breath. Leave the pose out or choose a gentler form when in doubt.

A stiff beginner can fold the back leg only partly, with the foot further out from the hip, and hold a strap looped around the straight foot instead of the foot itself. A folded blanket under the hips lifts the pelvis and makes the fold easier. A bent knee in the straight leg also takes the strain off the hamstrings. As the body opens, the hands reach the foot and the head comes closer to the knee. Hold the foot with both hands, then in time clasp the wrist beyond it. The other side is simply the mirror, with the same care taken to level the pelvis.

Rounding the upper back and dropping the head to reach the knee: fold from the hips and keep the chest long. Letting the pelvis tilt toward the straight leg: sit on a folded blanket under that hip and press both sitting bones evenly down. Forcing the folded knee or foot into place: bring the foot only as close as the knee allows. Holding the breath in the fold: breathe out slowly and keep the inhale light. Pulling the straight foot hard: use a strap and let the stretch come in its own time. Rushing out of the pose: come up slowly, spine last.
