Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana — half-bound-lotus forward bend
Asanas as Taught Today 27
Meaning · English
Ardha Baddha Padma Paschimottanasana: ardha, half; baddha, bound; padma, lotus; paschima, the west, the back of the body; uttana, stretched; asana, seat. The half-bound-lotus forward bend, the seated fold with one foot bound high on the thigh.
Take the name apart. Ardha is half. Baddha is bound. Padma is the lotus, the cross-legged seat with both feet resting high on the thighs. So half-bound lotus means one foot only is placed in the lotus, and the hand of that side reaches behind the back to hold it. Paschima is the west. The old picture has the body facing the rising sun in the east, so the front is east and the back is west. Uttana means stretched out. Paschimottana is the stretch of the whole back of the body, and asana is a seat or posture. Put together: a seated fold that lengthens the back, with one leg bound in half lotus. The hatha texts do not describe this pose. It is modern postural yoga, codified in the twentieth century in the Mysore line of Krishnamacharya and the schools that grew from it. Its place in the old frame is Yoga Sutras 2.46 to 2.48: a seat steady and easy, effort loosened, the mind resting on the infinite. The pose is taught for that reason. It asks the practitioner to bind one hip, fold over the other leg, and still keep the breath quiet and the effort light. The lesson carries a caution: it is learnt with a teacher.
1. Sit on the floor with both legs straight in front of you. Sit tall on your sitting bones. 2. Choose one leg to bend. Draw that foot in and place it high on the opposite thigh, close to the hip crease, sole turned up. The other leg stays straight. 3. Breathe in. Take the arm on the side of the bent leg around behind your back, and hold the bent foot with that hand. If the hand cannot reach, let it rest as far as it goes. 4. Breathe out. Fold forward over the straight leg, and hold that foot with your other hand. Let your eyes rest on the toes or on the shin. 5. Stay here. Breathe slowly and evenly through the nose. Never strain the bent knee. If it complains, ease the fold and loosen the foot. 6. Breathe in. Come up with a long spine, release the foot, and stretch both legs out straight. 7. Now do the other side: the other foot goes high on the opposite thigh, with the same breaths and the same fold. 8. When both sides are done, rest with both legs straight. Fine points: the fold begins at the hips, not the upper back. The bent knee stays heavy and quiet, and the foot sits against the belly without being forced upward. Stay for the number of breaths that remain easy, and stop before the knee speaks.
The body: the straight leg's hamstrings and calf lengthen, and so do the long muscles along the back. The bent leg's hip turns outward, which asks for room in the hip joint, the outer hip and the deep muscles around it. The knee is not the part meant to turn. It follows the hip, which is why the knee is the first thing to protect. The arm wrapped behind the back opens the front of the shoulder and chest a little and gently turns the trunk toward the straight leg. The belly softens against the folded thigh. The breath: the in-breath lengthens the spine before each movement and the out-breath lets the body fold. Slow breathing in the fold keeps the muscles from gripping. The mind: the shape is a closed one, with the hands holding the feet and the head bowed. There is little to decide. Attention gathers on the breath, the hold of the foot and the weight of the bent knee. The tradition's own account, from the Yoga Sutras, is that a seat of this kind loosens effort so the mind can rest. That is the tradition's account, not a physiological finding.
The hatha texts say nothing of this pose, so there is no verse to quote. The schools that teach it say it stretches the back of the body, opens the hips and shoulders, and prepares the body for sitting in full lotus. They say the folded shape quiets the mind and steadies the breath, and that it builds patience, because the bent knee cannot be hurried. These are the schools' teachings. Beyond them the pose makes no claim.
A retired tailor spent forty years cross-legged on a shop floor. Now he lowers himself to a mat, and his hips remember the old shape better than his back does. He tries one foot high on the thigh and finds it hard. Two things in this are well understood. Seated forward folds lengthen the hamstrings and back muscles with regular practice. Hip rotation, such as a half lotus, is limited by the shape of each person's joint, and forcing it passes the strain to the knee. Many people are simply built so that the foot will not reach the thigh. Good teachers say this plainly. The claims about the mind are gentler. Slow breathing and quiet attention are widely found to be calming, but nothing shows that this particular shape does more than any comfortable, steady posture. The Mysore line's belief that it prepares the body for lotus is a teaching, not a measured fact. The old ideas of prana and the nadis have no modern match.
This is not medical advice, and a page cannot correct a body. The lesson carries a caution card: this pose is learnt with an experienced teacher, not from a page. Stop at any pain, and above all pain in the bent knee. Take special care, or leave the pose out, with a knee injury or a recent knee or hip surgery, a disc problem in the lower back, sciatica, or pregnancy. In pregnancy the belly needs room, and a teacher should guide any change. Stiff hips, ankle trouble and shoulder injuries also call for a gentler form. Never pull the foot into place with the hands or force the fold. A tight hip should be allowed to open slowly, over weeks and not in one sitting.
Gentler: keep the bent foot lower on the thigh, or rest it against the inner thigh or shin as in a simple bend. Hold a strap looped around the straight foot in place of the foot. Sit on a folded blanket so the hips tilt forward. Bend the straight knee a little. If the hand cannot reach behind the back, let it rest on the thigh or hold a strap. Fuller: the foot sits high at the hip crease, the hand holds the bound foot, and the chest folds nearer the straight leg. The mirrored side is practised the same way, and the stiffer side may need a gentler version.
Pulling the foot up by force, which strains the knee → place it only as high as the hip allows. Rounding the upper back to reach the foot → fold from the hips with a long spine. Holding the breath → breathe slowly and evenly. Lifting the bent knee high off the floor and hanging it there → let it rest heavy, or support it with a blanket. Practising only the easier side → give both sides the same care. Gripping the straight foot with locked knees → soften the knee a little.
