Meaning · English

The rising of the one who is meditated upon, in the mind of the one who meditates: this alone is it. For the seeker who longs for it, it is the full entering into oneness with that deity. This alone is the winning of the nectar of immortality. This alone is the taking hold of the Self. This is the initiation into nirvana, and it gives the true being of Shiva.

Three words carry the verse. Dhyeya is the one meditated upon, from dhyai, to contemplate. Tadatmata is oneness, literally 'that-self-ness': the meditator's mind becomes the very thing it holds. Diksha is initiation, the rite that opens a student to the teaching. The Spanda Karikas say the deity is not far off, waiting to be reached. It rises inside the meditator's own mind. When a seeker truly wants this and the mind settles into oneness with the deity held in it, that is the whole matter. The text then names it four ways. It is amrita, the nectar of immortality. It is the taking hold of the Self, as if the Self had been slipping from the hand and is now held. It is the initiation into nirvana, the cooling of all restless wanting. And it gives the real being of Shiva. The weight falls on the word 'alone'. No separate prize waits behind the absorption. The commentators read this as the real initiation, beyond any outward rite. The question underneath is what actually frees a person. The teaching answers that it is the union itself, the meditator and the meditated no longer two. What the verse asks of the listener is a real longing for that oneness. Mere interest is not enough.

A drop of ink falls into a glass of clear water. For a moment it is a separate dark bead, then it spreads until no one can point to where the ink ends and the water begins. The meditator is the water, the deity is the ink, and oneness is the moment the edge between them goes.

1. Choose one form you already love: a face, a lamp flame, a name. Pick a quiet ten minutes today, morning or night. 2. Sit and hold only that in mind. Each time the mind drifts to a task or worry, bring it back without scolding yourself. 3. Near the end, notice whether the one holding and the thing held feel slightly less apart. Do not push for it. 4. Repeat tomorrow at the same hour, for the same length.

A woman sits on the floor of a small temple hall before dawn. She means to rest her mind on the face of her chosen deity, but her thoughts keep sliding to an unpaid electricity bill and a sister she has quarrelled with. She notices the slide, which is the first step. She returns to the face, and then to the face again. After a few rounds the returns come easier. Her breathing slows, and the bill is still in her mind but no longer commands it. For a short while, what she is looking at is what she is thinking. The verse teaches that this joining of meditator and meditated is itself the nectar, the initiation, the hold on the Self. It is not a means to something later. Ordinary experience confirms the smaller part of this: what we keep dwelling on colours our mood and how we carry ourselves. The verse does not promise that the bill will be paid, the quarrel mended, or the worry gone when she stands up. Those still need doing in the world.
