Living Free, Seeing Play

Spanda Karika 2.5

Meaning · English

Whoever knows the whole world as play, and keeps seeing it so, ever joined in that knowing, is freed while still living. Of this there is no doubt.

Three words carry it. Samvitti is knowing, from sam and vid: a full, settled knowing, not a passing opinion. Krida is play, the activity of a child or a king's idle sport, done for its own sake and not from need. Jivanmukta joins jivan, living, with mukta, released, from the root muc, to let go: one freed while still alive. Yukta, joined, comes from yuj, to yoke; it says the knowing is kept steadily and does not come and go. The text says that a person whose knowing is 'the whole world is play' is joined to it at all times, and is freed in this life without a doubt. 'Whole' leaves out nothing: pleasant and painful, gain and loss. Verse 2.3 has just said that no state exists without Shiva and that the experiencer is present in everything experienced. Here the teaching shows how that recognition looks when lived: the world's arising and closing is Shiva's easy doing, not a burden. The commentators read the freedom as already present, not something earned after death. The verse asks the listener to hold this seeing steadily, not to try it once.

A child builds a sandcastle at the water's edge, knowing the tide is part of the game. She digs, shapes and decorates with full care, and when a wave takes the wall she laughs and starts a tower. The child is the knower, the tide and sand are the world, and the play is the whole of it.

1. Choose one irritation you meet today: a delay, a spilled cup, a plan that fell apart. 2. When it lands, pause for three breaths and say silently, 'this too is play.' 3. Then carry on with the task as fully as before, only without the clenched grip. 4. That evening, spend two minutes recalling the moment: did the hold loosen, and for how long?

A man stands on a railway platform at midnight. His connecting train has left, the next is hours away, and he has a morning appointment. His jaw is tight and he keeps checking the board, which has not changed. The verse speaks to that moment. The text's teaching is that the world's turns are Shiva's play, and the one who knows this stays joined to that knowing. For him, that would first mean seeing the delay as one more movement in a larger play, not an insult aimed at him. Then he would still do what is needed: call ahead, find a bench, buy tea. His actions stay, but the clutching goes. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a task done with a loose grip is usually done more clearly than one done in a rage. The verse does not promise the train will come sooner, nor that his disappointment will not be felt. It does not remove loss or grief, and it is no replacement for a doctor or practical help when one is needed.
