Meaning · English

Because every state of being arises from him, the living soul is made of all things. In knowing each one, it becomes one with it. So among words, meanings and thoughts, there is no state that is not Shiva. The one who enjoys, in the form of what is enjoyed, stands present always and everywhere.

Three words carry the teaching. Jiva is the living soul, from jiv, to live: the one who experiences. Bhava is a state or thing that comes to be, from bhu, to become. Bhokta is the enjoyer, the one who takes in experience, from bhuj, to partake; bhogya is what is enjoyed. The Spanda Karikas begin with a reason. Every state and every thing rises from the one source, so the soul, which knows them all, is made of all things (sarvamaya). Then comes the way of it: when the soul knows a thing, it becomes one with it. Knowing is not standing apart and looking. It is taking the shape of what is known. From this the verse draws its conclusion. In any word, any meaning, any passing thought, there is no state that is not Shiva. Last, the knower and the known are not two. The enjoyer himself stands as the thing enjoyed, always and everywhere. The question answered is a worry of the practitioner: which thoughts are fit for the path, and which must be fought? The text answers that none lies outside Shiva. Kshemaraja, in the Spanda-nirnaya, reads this as the ground for seeing every mental state as the play of the one consciousness. The teaching asks the listener to meet each thought as Shiva's own movement, not as an intruder.

A potter's clay becomes a cup, a bowl, a lamp, and in each shape it is still only clay. Nothing leaves it when it is shaped. The clay is Shiva; each thought is a shape taken, and the one who holds the cup and the cup are the same clay.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the light low and let thoughts come as they will. 2. When an annoying or petty thought arrives, name it quietly: "this too is Shiva's movement." 3. Notice whether you push it away or let it be seen. Do not judge the result. 4. Once tomorrow, while eating or listening to someone, notice that the one tasting and the taste, the hearer and the voice, arrive together.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for news of his father's surgery. Ugly thoughts crowd in: fear, a flash of resentment about the cost, even a shameful wish for it all to be over. He tightens against each one and tires himself further. The verse changes the moment in steps. First, the thoughts are not enemies sent to test him; the text says no state lies outside Shiva. Second, he can watch each one rise, the way he watches a stranger pass, without becoming its owner or its judge. Third, the knower and the thing known are not far apart, so the watching is itself quiet and close, not a fight. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a thought fought hard tends to come back louder, and one simply noticed often loosens. The verse does not promise the fear will go, the surgery will succeed, or that grief will be spared. It does not replace the surgeon, the nurse, or a friend sitting beside him. It offers only a different way of standing among the thoughts that come.
