Quietly Dissolving Home
Spanda Karika 2.2
तत्रैव सम्प्रलीयन्ते शान्तरूपा निरञ्जनाः । सहाराधकचित्तेन तेनैते शिवधर्मिणः
Meaning · English
In that very place they dissolve completely, peaceful in form and free of stain, together with the mind of the one who worships. So these mantras, too, share the nature of Shiva.
Four words carry the verse. Shanta means stilled, a form that has stopped straining. Niranjana means unstained, from anjana, the smudge of kohl on the eye. The mantras carry no mark. Aradhaka is the worshipper, one who sets out to win a deity's favour. Shivadharmin means having Shiva's nature as one's own nature. The clauses run in order. First, 'in that very place' means the source the mantras rose from, which is Shiva. They dissolve there fully, not merely resting. Their form is peaceful and unmarked. They go back together with the worshipper's mind. So the one who chanted does not stay outside, watching the words vanish. The mind goes in too. The last line draws the conclusion: since they end in Shiva, mantras share his nature. The previous verse showed mantras at work, taking up strength and acting for their purpose. This verse answers what becomes of them when the work is done. The commentators read it as a return, not a loss. The teaching asks the listener to see the whole arc of a mantra, from its rising to its quiet end, and to understand that the one who uses it ends in the same place.
A bell is struck. The note swells, fills the room, then thins until only silence is left, and the hand that struck it has already come to rest. The bell's sound was never apart from that silence. It rose out of it and went back, and the one who rang it returns there too.
1. Tonight, pick one short phrase you already know, a name, a line of prayer or a single word, and say it quietly for about five minutes. 2. Do not push it to stay loud or clear. Let it get fainter if it wants to. 3. When it fades, stay without speaking for one more minute. 4. Notice where the phrase went, and where your own busy mind went with it.
A man sits in a hospital corridor after midnight, his father behind a closed door. He has been repeating a prayer under his breath for an hour. At first the words are sharp and anxious, almost bargaining. Slowly they thin out. His breathing slows, his shoulders drop, and there is a stretch where nothing is being said at all. The verse names that stretch. The words did their work and settled, and his mind settled with them. It was not left behind, still gripping. If he is told to stop forcing the phrase, he can let it go quiet without feeling he has failed. Ordinary experience confirms that repeated words tend to soften and slow as they go on. The verse does not say his father will recover, and it does not take the fear away when the stillness ends. It is also no replacement for the doctors or for asking the nurse what is happening. It describes only where a mantra and its worshipper's mind come to rest, as the text teaches it.
