Mantras Borrow Their Power

Spanda Karika 2.1

तदाक्रम्य बलं मन्त्राः सर्वज्ञाबलशालिनः । प्रवर्तन्तेऽधिकाराय करणानीव देहिनाम्

Meaning · English

Resting on that power, the mantras, strong with the strength of all-knowing, go out to their work, just as the senses do for beings who live in a body.

Four words carry this. Mantra comes from man, to think, with the sense of a tool that guards the one who holds it. Bala is strength or power. Sarvajna is all-knowing: sarva, everything, and jna, to know. Adhikara is a task or an office, the job a thing is placed to do. Karana means an instrument, and here it names the senses. The Spanda Karikas teach that a mantra does not hold its force in its sounds. It rests on a power, the throb of consciousness, and that power is all-knowing. Because the mantra leans on it, the mantra is strong with that knowing and goes out to do its work. The comparison is the senses. An eye does not make sight. It is an instrument through which the one who sees acts. A mantra is an instrument of the same kind, and what works through it is the Self's own power. This answers a question the earlier teaching leaves open: if the Self's throb is the source of everything, what is the force in a sacred word? The commentators read 'that power' as the spanda power of the Self. The text asks the listener to look past the syllables to what they rest on.

A kitchen has taps of many shapes, one for hot, one for cold, one for the garden. Each seems to give its own water, but all of them draw on the one tank on the roof. The mantras are the taps. The tank is the all-knowing power they rest on.

1. Choose one short word or phrase you already say, such as a name of God, a prayer line, or simply 'thank you'. 2. This evening, sit for two minutes and say it slowly, three times, aloud or silently. 3. After the third time, stay quiet for a full minute. Notice that you were aware of the word before, during and after it. 4. Ask once where that awareness was standing while the word was spoken. Leave the question unanswered and go on with your evening.

A grandmother sits in a hospital corridor while her grandson is in surgery. Under her breath she repeats a line she has said since childhood. She half wonders whether the words themselves are doing something, or whether she is only filling the time. The text would turn her question around. The force does not sit in the sounds. The words rest on a power that knows, and the words are the instrument she reaches with, as the eye is for seeing. So she can say the line slowly, let it be the way she turns toward that source, and stay with it when her thoughts run ahead to the operating theatre. Ordinary experience confirms a small part of this: slow, repeated words steady the breath and give a worried mind somewhere to rest. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not take away her fear. It is no substitute for the surgeon, or for the nurse she can ask for news.
