Meaning · English

Otherwise, creation stands on its own, because it has that very nature, just as it does constantly for the ordinary person, in the two states of waking and dream.

Three words carry the verse. Srishti is creation, from srij, to let go or send forth. Svatantra is independent, literally self-ruled. Laukika is the ordinary person, one who lives by the common view of the world, from loka. Jagrat is waking and svapna is dream, the two states named at the end. The Spanda Karikas say that without the knowledge they teach, creation would stand as something independent. The ordinary person, in waking and in dream alike, takes each scene as a world that runs by itself, apart from the one who sees it. The word "constantly" matters. This is not an occasional slip. It is the steady habit of ordinary perception. The verse is a warning placed beside the teaching around it. The neighbouring verses describe how the inner Self gives rise to what is wished for and seen. This one says what happens when that is not known: the world looks self-standing, and the Self looks like a bystander. The commentators read it this way, as a description of ordinary seeing, not a claim that the world is a lie. What it asks of the listener is only to notice that both states are alike in this. Each is an appearance arising in the one who knows.

A child watches a puppet show from the front. The little king walks, argues and bows, and seems to move by himself. Behind the curtain one hand is working him. Ordinary seeing is the view from the front: the world appears to act alone, and the hand that gives it life goes unnoticed.

1. Tomorrow morning, before you get out of bed, stay still for one minute. Remember that the dream you just left felt as solid as this room. 2. Once during the day, when something irritates you, pause for one breath. Notice that the scene is appearing in your own awareness. 3. Tonight, before sleep, recall one thing from today that seemed entirely out there, apart from you. Ask quietly who was aware of it.

A woman wakes at three in the morning, heart racing, after a dream in which her late father was angry with her. For a few seconds the room, the dream and her grief are one frightening thing. Then she feels the blanket, hears the fan, and the dream moves to its proper place: it was happening in her. The verse speaks to that moment of sorting. The Spanda Karikas teach that ordinary perception takes both waking and dream scenes as self-standing, with no knower behind them. Waking from a dream shows how that works, because the scene that felt independent turns out to have arisen in the one who saw it. The text invites the same recognition about the waking scene. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: while a dream lasts, nothing in it feels borrowed or made. The verse does not say the dream means anything, and it does not ease the grief. A person whose nights are repeatedly broken by frightening dreams should speak to a doctor.
