Meaning · English
A thing seen faintly, even when the mind is attentive, shows itself again more clearly once one's own strength and effort have gone into it. In the same way, whatever truly stands in whatever place and manner, taking hold of that strength, it soon comes forth in just that way.
Three words carry the verse. Asphuta means faint or unclear. Its opposite, sphuta, means clear, and comes from a root meaning to burst open. Udyoga is effort, a rousing of oneself. Bala is strength, and svabala is one's own strength, not borrowed. The first half is an ordinary fact. Something is seen dimly, even though the mind is attentive. Attention alone has not been enough. Then one's own strength and effort go into it, and it appears again, plainly. The second half applies this to what the Karikas have been teaching. What truly stands in a thing, in whatever place and manner, comes forth in just that way once one takes hold of the strength. The text says it comes soon. It is taught here because a reader may ask why the inner power described in the nearby verses is not already plain to everyone. The Karikas answer that it is faint, not absent, and effort makes it clearer. The commentators read the strength as the power of one's own awareness. The teaching asks for steady, personal effort, and it treats a dim sense of the truth as the beginning of seeing it.
Old letters on a worn stone can hardly be read. Someone lays paper over them and rubs gently with charcoal, again and again, and the shapes darken until the words stand out. The letters were always cut there. In the teaching, the faint truth is the carving, and steady effort is the rubbing.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and call to mind one ordinary place from your childhood, such as a kitchen or a doorway. 2. Write down only what comes, even if it is thin: a colour, a sound, a smell. 3. Do the same for five minutes tomorrow and the day after. 4. Notice which details were faint on the first evening and which have become clearer.
A first-year nursing student stands at a bedside with a stethoscope. Her teacher says there is a murmur, and she hears only a blur of thumping. She is paying full attention, yet nothing separates out. The teaching would change what she does next. She does not decide she has no ear for it. She listens again, on the next patient and the one after, and sound by sound the beats pull apart until the extra whisper between them is plain. Ordinary experience bears this out: a faint thing often becomes clear through repeated, willing effort, not through a single strained look. The text means something larger than hearing, a truth about one's own nature that is dim now and grows clearer. The limit is plain. The verse does not say the murmur will be heard tonight, and it does not replace a teacher who points to where to listen. It does not replace a doctor's judgment about the patient either. It says only that the faint is not the absent, and that one's own steady effort is what brings it out.
