Strength Beyond the Body

Spanda Karika 3.6

Meaning · English

Even one who is weak, taking hold of that strength, sets about his task. In the same way, one who is extremely hungry can cover over his hunger.

Three words carry the verse. Bala is strength, the same strength the preceding verses call one's own. Akramya means taking hold of, literally stepping onto, from kram, to step. Bubhuksha is hunger, the wish to eat or enjoy, from bhuj, to eat. The first line says a weak person, once he steps onto that strength, goes about his work. The second line says a very hungry person, by the same means, can cover his hunger over. The word is covering, not destroying: the hunger is still there, but it no longer rules him. The Karikas teach this to answer a doubt left by the verses before it. If awareness has such strength, why do tired and needy people seem unable to use it? The answer is that the strength was never the body's stock, so the body's lack does not cancel it. The commentators read the hunger as an example of any bodily pull that the strength can overrule. The text asks the listener to stop measuring what he can do by how weak or hungry he feels, and to look for the strength the body only borrows.

A mother has not eaten all day and is worn out. In the night she hears her child cry, and she is on her feet before she thinks of her own hunger. The picture maps to the strength that is not made of the body's reserves, and that takes over once the work is truly taken up.

1. Choose one small task you have been putting off, something that takes ten minutes. 2. Before you start, stand still for three breaths and name to yourself why the task matters. 3. Work at it for the ten minutes. Notice whether tiredness or hunger moves to the edge of your attention. 4. When you finish, eat or rest as you normally would. Nothing here asks you to skip meals.

A father carries his feverish daughter through night streets looking for an open pharmacy. He has eaten nothing since morning and his legs are heavy. He does not notice either until the medicine is in his hand. The verse speaks to this moment. His attention has been taken wholly by what must be done, and the Karikas would say the strength he acts from is his own awareness, not his stomach. Ordinary experience agrees that a task which fully holds us pushes hunger and tiredness to the side for a while. Afterward the body asks for its due, and he needs to eat, drink and sleep. The verse does not say the body's needs are false or that hunger can be ignored for long. It does not cure illness or replace a doctor. It does not promise that strength will come each time it is called. It says only that weakness and hunger are not the final word on what a person can do.
