The Self Takes the Seat
Spanda Karika 3.7
Meaning · English
As the body, once ruled by this resolve, brings omniscience and the other powers, so when one stands firm over one's own self, the same will come about everywhere.
Three words carry the verse. Adhishthana is presiding, from adhi, over, and stha, to stand: a ruler standing at the seat of rule, not a guest in the house. Sarvajnata is all-knowingness, from sarva, all, and jna, to know. Atman, here svatman, is one's own self. The verse has two halves. First, when the body is presided over, omniscience and the other powers come. The earlier verses speak of a person who takes hold of his own strength and then acts, even a weak one, even one very hungry. The commentators read 'this' as pointing back to that taking hold. Second, the same presiding, turned on one's own self, reaches everywhere, not only the body. The question behind it is how far such mastery goes. Does it stop at the skin? The Spanda Karikas answer that it does not. Whoever stands in the self as its master finds the reach is unlimited, because the self is not confined to the body. The verse asks for a change of seat: to stop being carried by body and moods, and to stand in the place from which they are governed. It names the powers as what follows, not as the aim.
A man is driven to work every day as a passenger, watching the road slide by. One morning he takes the driver's seat. The car, the road and the hours are the same, but now he steers. Presiding over the self is that change of seat, and the whole journey is then his to direct.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and give it five unhurried minutes. 2. Before you begin, stand still for three breaths and notice that you are the one about to act. 3. While you work, each time the mind pulls you off to something else, notice who is noticing, and bring yourself back. 4. Afterward, note whether the task felt carried out by you or merely happened.
A man sits in a hospital corridor waiting for news about his father. His knee jumps, his jaw is tight, his thoughts race through the worst outcomes. Then he plants both feet on the floor, lets his breath lengthen, and unclenches his hands. The verse says that taking charge of the body is the first step in taking charge of the self. When the doctor comes, he hears her words plainly and can ask the right question. Ordinary experience confirms that a settled body makes attention clearer. The text goes further: it teaches that mastery of the self opens into a knowing that reaches everywhere, and it offers this as its own teaching about the self. In that corridor, the verse does not promise that the news will be good, and it does not remove fear or grief. It does not replace the doctor or the care his father needs. It only says where he can stand while he waits.
